Always thought of this when hear the opening pads to Palomino; it's music from Ghouls 'n' Ghosts on the Amiga, released in 1989; the pads come in at 23 seconds:

Sampled possibly, although the Palomino version doesn't have the footsteps and has the windchimes instead.

Simon Smiths early tunes are really underrated, especially Palomino, not played by many a part from Bukem back in the day, this is getting a repress this year from mpsvinyl... go buy it!

I'm gonna go with "Getafix" and not argue personal opinion, but the flip side to this 10" (Sty-le) is a corker of tune, and always gets my needle to the red. I first heard it on Bryan Gee's Dread at the Controls mixtape, and it blew my mind. So this discussion has brought us Palomino, Jungle, and Sty-le, which are all amazing tunes produced by this man in my opinion... So by all means, do yourself and Mr. Smith a favor and please don't stop with Palomino.

For anyone that followed the emergence of drum and bass from its inception when ground breaking tracks like LTJ's Demon's Theme and Music to name but a couple were defining the genre, this track should be instantly recognisable appearing on numerous Bukem and Fabio tapes.

Palomino (Give It To Me) uses the same break as is found on Demon's Theme, is peppered with samples of firework whistles and what sounds like someone whacking a flag pole or a radiator with a pipe... It doesn't sound too promising from that description, but add a sub-bass that will rattle your eyeballs in their sockets combined with the mournful, yearning vocal samples and what you have is a beautiful example of prototype drum and bass that helped pave the way for so many artists in the atmospheric or dare I say intelligent style.

Sadly in my opinion, Simon Bassline Smith never really delivered anything quite so inspiring after this, but for any serious collector of Atmospheric DnB this is a tune that really needs to be in your collection, I know my collection would feel very incomplete without it.
