Show All 72 Reviews- My copy is slightly warped, nothing inacceptable but that’s a bit disappointing, considering theses reissues are getting (very) expensive here in France. Also, the noise floor is quite noticeable et there are some annoying tics and pops throughout. I didn’t clean it for the moment, hope it’ll improve things a bit, because the music and mastering are superb !
- Edited 2 days agoI just bought my 7th copy. Yes, I bought 7 copies because the 6 before had issues. Finally a flat copy.
My initial thought was 45 RPM is much better. However, this time around I decided to HEAVY clean the record before playing it, and it did make so much difference.
the 45 RPM gives you what you expect from it. More room, more space, high dynamics, which help the instruments to shine. Also, it was mastered slightly louder than the 33 rpm. However, I don't like how the vocals sound in the 45 rpm relative to this one.
I think the vocals are front-and-center in this release, which I much prefer. This is Jazz vocals. I personally, don't really care much for the rhythm track, as it merely compliment the vocal performance. As well, I personally prefer how the mid-range is not lost in the instrument. I think RKS just tuned down all the high frequencies more than Marino did in his 45 RPM.
Overall, both versions are great. I will probably play the 33 RPM more as I think it is slightly better. Either copy is sufficient, I don't think there is that much different between them to begin with to justify owning both.
By far this is the best copy to own at its price.
Knocking star out because of the garbage QC from "Quality" Records Pressing - Side by side with the new Acoustic Sounds series (have only gotten to do this on a small handful of titles and the AS series has been undefeated so far), this 2x45 RPM just soars so far ahead the newer 33 RPM remaster by Ryan K. Smith.
It isn't the fault of the latter engineer, the 45 RPM just makes the soundstage and bass on this particular release shine considerably brighter. If your concern is owning the best rendition of the music without price as an option, this is the one you want. If you want a nicer gatefold, a more convenient 33 RPM pressing, and what is still a solid B+ mastering, go with the new Acoustic Sounds series release and save some money. Can't really lose. - This is my first ever pressing of this record in fact I hadn't heard it before this. I have quite a bit of Ella records but never really took to Louis. Well that changed with this release. What a marvelous pairing and they really play off each other well. I loved every tune. Louis in particular has incredible presence and the whole affair is just a joy. Really superb Verve sound, and though I don't have others to compare to, I could highly recommend this pressing, which was just about perfect.
- What a delight this record is! Ella & Louis really sound as though they are standing next to each other singing just like the photograph on the inside of the gatefold cover. The vocals are brought very much to the forefront on this recording and there is an incredible amount of clarity here right down to background noises and in particular Armstrong’s vocals are really an “in the room” experience.
A great selection of songs which suit the duet format very well and the band supports the singers tastefully and with a nice swinging style.
As with all the other records I’ve bought from this series, the vinyl is near perfectly pressed and free of any major blemishes. Highly recommended If this era of vocal jazz is your kind of thing. - Flat, silent, and beautifully mastered. I have yet to get one of these AS Series reissues that doesn't sound incredible. The best bang for your buck in audiophile jazz, maybe ever.
