referencing Five In One Night (12", EP, 33 ⅓ RPM) SHADOW 5
Not only is this a remarkable piece of work, music wise, but it's the striking latent dark message about the descend of UK's rave scene from euphoric utopia into dark dystopia which needs to be taken into consideration, and the music on this EP, intentionally or not, reflects it.
First of all, the cover sports a hand holding a lit joint while simultaneously cutting a line of coke with a credit card, and the back sleeve sports a tab with some fifteen pills in it. Maybe an allusion to the scene going too far with the flamboyant party life? The golden era of heavy MDMA consmuption has been replaced by massive paranoia and smiles were traded away for expressions of worry and disbelief... Who knows? Or maybe it's all just a good joke!
As for the track names, need I elaborate? From the pesky police officers stripping you to your underwear, to taking five 'E's in one night, and then coming back to your own self the next morning, the music takes you through it all.
As for the music, this is phenomenal hardcore from when it was still hella witty. Fast breakbeats, cheesy yet uplifting piano sequences, and amazing scratching decorate the opener, which is in my opinion the standout. Starts out with female whispers going "ecstasy ecstasy" (a tribute to Beltram perhaps?) interrupted by male "do it now" samples. Soon some proper rave madness gets dropped, with a passage of abbundant DJ trickery and "dance you know the time 'cause I' ma get ill" catch phrase - voila - a top notch old school anthem.
Strip Search is along the same lines, with a brief female chant used as a hook, and melancholic melodies some sixty seconds deep. The same hip hop samples are used, as well as the 'ecstatic' whispers, and despite the somewhat corny approach, this track has a highly nostalgic touch to it.
Drumtrip and The Come Down are like shorter reworks of the A1 and B1 tunes. Same beats, same samples and effects, but slightly different structures.
My advice would be heading for Five In One Night first, because odds are you will fancy the rest of this release as well. Vintage early hardcore from a duo which gained way more recognition under their main project, 2 Bad Mice. This is a provocative, quirky release very worth owning, if ony for the cover art!
