- You really should have the vinyl issues to enjoy these tracks. They are analog recordings , of music set in a aural soundscape of a specific environment. This can only be a sampler .
- I have to confess that I didn't even know who Larry Levan was when I bought this. It started a buying spree of anything with his name on and many other disco compilations. I've got a feeling I was not the only one! I don't regret it though. I learned a lot and found so many gems. Personal faves are Chaka Khan's Clouds and Sister Sledge's Lost in Music.
- Too bright ..too compressed ..too fatiguing .. unlistenable .. the man would turn in his grave .. poor show ..even the live recordings of him spinning are better sound quality
- Edited 7 months agoExcellent compilation of some stellar Paradise Garage/Larry Levan staples...Some of these tracks were available on the previous RHINO comp, "Give your body up--Club classics & house foundations--Vol. 1-3", and the mastering of those songs was MUCH BETTER than on this comp. Too much limiting used on this one...
Although that series did not have Larry's name in the title, he is mentioned in the liner notes as is the Garage and The Loft. - Edited 8 years agoi havent heard the UK version, but this US pressing is...i dont know..a proper joke to say the least. Even the mp3s you can get online sound far superior, and way more natural than these records. the only playable track is the Lover's Holiday, luckily it's one of the highlights. On the other hand you get the worst sounding "Havent you heard" ever pressed..so if you re buying this because of the patrice Rushen song - dont do that..the guitar solo, and the vocal track make your average youtube clip sound like proper hi-fi..
The discs are rock solid, 160g each - it looks and feels expensive, problem is that it sounds like there was no test pressing and no audio evaluation of the final product. Larry Levan would be the last guy to play these records, and would have never allow his name used for anything sounding like this. - Fantastic collection of Garage classics, and essential for anyone wanting to learn about classic underground soulful disco and the Garage/Larry in general.
The pressing, however is not stellar. The sonics were compromised due to squeezing too much music on each side. Each side should have been dedicated to a single track.
