Notes

Open Road is the eighth studio album, and ninth album overall from Donovan. It is also considered the debut album from the band Open Road. The album was released in the US sometime before July 25, 1970 (Epic Records E 30125 (stereo)), and in the UK sometime before September 12, 1970 (Dawn Records DNLS 3009).

After splitting with Mickie Most during the Barabajagal sessions, Donovan decided to move back to the UK against the wishes of his management, who most likely objected due to the heavy taxation in the country and the distance from the American market. There he began recording and producing the tracks that would form his next studio album. Donovan's production was much rougher and more organic than Mickie Most's cleanly polished production on Donovan's hits of the 1960s.

During these sessions, Donovan assembled the band Open Road with drummer John Carr, keyboardist Mike O'Neil, and bass and guitar player Mike Thomson. The band played a style that was dubbed celtic rock by Donovan. Many of the songs on Open Road ponder the negative side of industrialization and the lost peacefulness of a previous time. While some of this had been touched on in Donovan's previous work, this is the first album where the topic is expounded at length.

On August 22, 2000, Repertoire Records reissued Open Road (RR 4880) on CD in Germany. This marks the first CD release of the album.

The photos here appear to be from a promo copy (judging by the labels and the sticker removed from back). Is there a regular non-promo release of this, where someone can update with the proper photos?

I love HURDY GURDY MAN and BARABAJAGAL, but OPEN ROAD is my favorite Donovan album. It tends to be overlooked, which is a shame, because it's a very strong collection of tunes. "Celtic Rock" is one of the song titles, and it's an apt description for the overall vibe of this record. I also like how it sounds like it was performed by a band, rather than Donovan with a bunch of studio musicians. There really isn't a bad song on the album, although "Joe Bean's Theme" seems a bit out of place. This pressing sounds great, it's by far the best sounding album of Donovan's catalog to this point, with depth to the low end, rich harmonies, and a full bodied sound. I've had this copy for about 35 years, and taken good care of it - it still plays very clean with virtually no surface noise.

D leaves his hippy folk behind for a more progressive rootsy Celtic country-rock vibe with some mild Americanisms on an LP that flows quite nicely. An underrated gem in his oeuvre.
            Sublime offering.

Agree with jamesjazzy. This is my favorite Donovan album for the last 50 years. 3.81 average rating? Hmm. Give it another listen.

Quite a lot of crackle and pops on this pressing. Nonetheless audio quality is good and sharp. Comes with green cardboard inner sleeve with no poly lining.

This release of Donovan's band-Open Road I recall dearly from my childhood, but especially Side 2. I am playing this original vinyl LP this very minute.A true wonderment from 1970- when I was 8 yrs old..back when things were so much better and more real in the organic.I recommend this album.
