Not the best sounding, it's 70's MCA fake stereo, so what could you expect. I have the Complete Buddy LP set so I really just got this for the beautiful cover artwork.

I don't even have a massive rant for this one. At least they used the correct version of "Ting-a-Ling", even if a good bit of the intro figure is missing and it skips a bit, just like on Hoodoo's previous Buddy Holly CD. Weren't Hoodoo a really reputable and, dare I say it, good public domain label at one point? I remember their Bo Diddley 1962 reissue being genuinely decent.

This has the rarer rockabilly version of That'll Be The Day.

These eleven tracks all appear on the MCA Coral "Rainbow Series" 'The Nashville Sessions' CDLM 8038 issued, apparently, in 1975 - with the addition of an alternate version of "Rock Around with Ollie Vee".

Eleven of the tracks are the same as Ace of Hearts AH3 "That'll Be the Day". B6 is an addition being an alternate version of A4 recorded nearly four months later in 1956.

The Three Tunes are definitely not on "backing vocals", as listening to the LP will quickly show that there are no backing vocals whatsoever anywhere on any track!

It's actually the name given by Decca Records to the three musicians who recorded with Holly in July 1956: Sonny Curtis (guitar), Don Guess (bass) and Jerry Allison (drums).

This album is a must for any Holly fan. Usually a star's first recordings only show glimpses of he/she's greatness, but Buddy Holly had the voice and talent from the get-go. Also, it's a rougher side of Buddy; 'That'll Be the Day' is an early take of the classic, and its crudeness makes me prefer this version to the polished hit. Holly's distinctive voice is already completely realized on 'Modern Don Juan' where he jumps from falsetto to bass with much glee. The real revelation is 'Midnight Shift', a jumping rockabilly which showcases Holly in rarely heard misogynist mode. The mono version of this album is preferable, but I own a stereo copy, and the reprocessed stereo sounds fine, strangely enough.
