The Grateful Dead – Anthem Of The Sun

Can someone compare SQ on this to the 2011 Rhino AAA vinyl (also utilizing the ‘68 mix): https://www.discogs.com/release/4151818-The-Grateful-Dead-Anthem-Of-The-Sun

This is a very interesting mix of the album. Glad this was the version they choose for this release. Packaging is usual glossy and high quality cover we expect from VMP. I enjoyed the booklet and art print. My only downside with this release is the surface noise. Even after a wet clean this has pops and crackles on occasion that are noticeable through the music. Considering what VMP charges, I really wish they would use a more consistent vinyl source than GZ. Though to be fair, most of my problem GZ purchases have been non VMP records.

Wow. I'm not sure if it's the 1968 mix or the BG mastering but this blows my 2020 reissue (which utilizes the 1972 mix) out of the water. Really, really impressed with this one. Hearing the album like I've never heard it before.

sounds amazing i bought the Chris bellman 50 annv. digital cut vinyl and it was terrible !!!! This Chris bellman AAA pressing smokes the digital cut he did !!!!!!!!!!! I wish these record companies and labels would stop being so cheap and press AAA when the source was AAA to begin with instead of cutting off a digital file! This is a clear Example of how much better the Record can be when done right!

This is a horrible sounding pressing save your money and try to get a early 70s back copy or the vinyl me please cut of this album

Packaging is insanely nice. My record showed up with a bug (a literal bug) pressed into the record. Record was unplayable because the bug was half in/half out. Pretty crazy. Quick response from VMP and new copy on its way.

Gorgeous release. The artwork and lettering on the front cover are all spot gloss on a deluxe mat purple background. It's almost silky. You can FEEL the quality as well as see it. The round photo on the back cover is spot gloss as well. I have never heard this album sound better and the vinyl is a spectacular orange and yellow sunburst. The whole thing is a true work of art. You get a booklet and an art print as well. The letter from the Reprise Records head honcho complaining about the band's attitude in the recording studio (as well as the guys' response scrawled all over it) is a nice touch, You NEED this.!!

Along with Aoxomoxoa and Live/Dead, one of my absolute favorite GD albums from the day it was released and this new pressing is all that and more. Not a lot of top end but thats to be expected wish such layering recording techniques but the bass more than makes up for it. Crystal clear deep sound too, hear a lot of things I never heard before. I probably have a dozen copies of this release, both remixed and the original (as this record is) and this one tops them all.

Just a side note: my parents had a vacation place right near Kings Beach Bowl and I used to go there often and catch acts at the bowling alley lounge. Thats what it was, Kings Beach BOWL as in bowling alley...as I recall the lounge was downstairs (you could hear the bowling balls upstairs as they went down the alley when it was quiet) with a separate entrance around the side of the building. So some might think the Dead were playing some big Hollywood Bowl type place but it was just a neighborhood bowling alley on the edge of the lake. I think one night Bill the drummer was too tired to play after skiing all day and Mickey had to do it by himself that evening. I unfortunately was not in town when they played there so I missed it. Listening to the KBB recording I only hear a few snippets, feedback mostly, that I recognize on the Anthem LP. -jb

Is this the original mix or the second more commercial mix? I’m not familiar with the different versions?

Incredible pressing. Awesome separation and soundstage. This is the reissue we have all waited for and needed, to hear the album in its true intended glory. A true timeless art piece
