Sounds beautiful, gorgeously textured and rich in its dynamics. This is one of those albums that deserves an excellent vinyl pressing and luckily this original German copy delivers on every level. A kaleidoscopic journey through glitchy electronics, light guitar, whispered vocals and samples. One of those albums that only gets better with each listen as you start to piece together the shards of genius it leaves scattered across the recording like broken glass.

I got all three of the Temporary Residence 2016 reissues, so this review applies to all 3. They sound good and don't have any major issues but they all have an assortment of clicks and pops which sometimes comes through on the quieter tracks. The thing with this band is you never really know what is actually a vinyl defect and what was on the original recording. For example on this record there's a lot of "surface noise" on Twelve Fold Chain but that's actually on purpose. Meanwhile the ending of "None But Shining Hours" has this cool skip rhythm at the end but it turns out there's a bass noise so heavy it makes the needle jump! So yeah not perfect but overall they're fine. Now where's The Way Out?

Anyone know if the remaster sounds any better than the Tomlab original?

My copy of this seems to have a pressing defect at the end of "None But Shining Hours". Anyone else experience this issue?

After the folk-glitch wonder of THE LEMON OF PINK, The Books continue to push their experimental side with LOST AND SAFE. This time out, however, they focus on a new musical texture: vocals. And the final results are mixed: while the quiet hope of “A Little Longing Goes Away” conveys a languorous emotion, but “Be Good to Them Always” seems to be trying too hard for a poetic quality by echoing a spoken-word repetition over the original sample. “Vogt Dig For Kloppervok” doesn’t benefit from the snippet of ‘Jabberwocky’—it seems more unfocused than most, and “Smells Like Content” just tries too hard. But, on the positive side, the guitar of “It Never Changes To Stop” harkens to their earlier album with an authoritarian sample that turns the track almost sinister, and the busy percussion of “An Animated Description of Mr. Maps” gives that track a solid backbone. “An Owl with Knees” thrums, and “Twelve Fold Chain” takes the album out on a drifting, quiet note. It’s nice to see The Books continue to experiment—even if it’s only partially successful. But it’s the experiment counts as much as the results.
