Notes
The Dead's fifth album, released June 14, 1970. It was the first album they released that year, with American Beauty released later that November. The album was a return to the folk, blues, and old-time music of the jug bands that were the traditional roots of the Grateful Dead, but the songs were all Garcia/Hunter compositions.
The rear cover was upside down on the original release of the album. The album was recorded at Pacific High Recording Studio, San Francisco and engineered by Alembic.

The level of detail in this pressing is absolutely incredible. You really pick up every little intricacy that the Dead put into their playing on this record, and the harmonies here are just divine.
If you're looking for the definitive pressing of this record, this really might be it. - Edited 19 days agoThis pressing really shines , great bass and vocals are clear and warm . Found this in my local record store , sleeve Condition is poor but vinyl VG+ .
- Yeah, it's in-your-face good. Worth every penny...I get crackling between a few tracks but whatever...in the music, it's incredible man. You hear all the good stuff and it's very clean.
- Dry, compressed, no bass. not a good sounding press at all in my opinion.
as if they put a bandpass filter on the master bus… - Edited 6 months agoJust picked this Classic up, cleaned, and spinning...The wax is flat, very little surface noise, spacious stage, nice separation, bass is thick but not over powering, sparkling highs, really the only thing I can come up with is the fade out on High Time seems a little abrupt (doesn't have that natural resonance out) but probably just me...All in all sounds damn good on my modest system...
(Fluance RT-82 w/Acrylic Platter, ATN-XP cart/5 stylus. Nobsound T3 Phono Amp, Aiyima A07 Pro, Kicker KB6B, & 2x Polk PSW10 Subs...Simple Low Cost Setup)...Happy Listening referencing Workingman's Dead (LP, Album, Terre Haute Pressing, No Exec Prod Credit, Artisan) WS 1869
Got a US release, Burbank labels, no W in rim text, no STEREO on labels, and CAD added to the standard matrix. Not to be found on discogs.referencing Workingman's Dead (LP, Album) WBS.1869
This is a great sounding pressing. My starting point for the Grateful Dead.referencing Workingman's Dead (LP, Album, Reissue) WS 1869
A solid Dead release, with interesting writing and some elevated harmony vocal performance, not unlike that of CSN. And that's a compliment.
My favorite track is Casey Jones.
Clean pressing with no issues. Nicely mixed authentic analog presentation.
3.5 stars. Recommended.- Review courtesy of Wingtip from Hoffman forums because I can’t say it better:
The MoFi 33s are hit-or-miss but the 45s of Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty are absolutely incredible. I really believe that this is as close as I’m going to get to hearing the master tape rolling at 15ips. Incredible pressing, incredible sound. Everything is happening right now, in my listening room, when I spin this LP. I keep this and the 1970 greenie close to the turntable, and the others in storage.
