- Great music, poor execution. Not that it doesn't sound great, but I KNOW that there are competent mastering engineers still out there (JJ Golden, are you there? Kevin Gray, can you hear me?) that are capable of putting 14 songs on a single Lp. Especially when the majority of them clock in around 3:00 or under. But no - we get _TWO_ 33 1/3 RPM discs for these 14 songs. I cannot understand the reasoning for this at all. But whatever. I'll still enjoy it, even through getting up to flip something every 9 minutes and 30 seconds.
- Edited one year agoI am bemused to read reviews commenting about the blurry artwork. Dude, almost all the artwork in the entire Dolly series has been blurry. Actually, almost all artwork done by VMP on any album is blurry. VMP stans say this is because the negatives are not available, etc. etc. but actually the artwork can be cleaned up with readily-available software if you care enough to take the time to do it. But you can pretty much bet that the cover art on any VMP album will look like shit.
It's not all that unusual for VMP to put two records in a single sleeve like this. It's shitty, but they do it sometimes. Most people will wish they had done a gatefold. As other reviewers have noted, it is bizarre that there are no album credits or notes of any kind anywhere in this package. You get the distinct feeling of corners being cut and time not being taken to do a good job on the release. Dare I say you get the feeling not just of inattention to detail, but perhaps a feeling of indifference or even contempt for the product.
That said, this record itself looks good and it sounds pretty good. I hear a medium soundstage. I don't necessarily hear clear placement of instruments in space, but the sound is clear. Mostly this is quiet music and that means the vinyl needs to be very quiet indeed. This is a reasonably quiet pressing, but it has some ticks and clicks. In typical GZ fashion, as Side 2 and Side 3 of my copy approach the run-out, I get some cacophonous clicks and pops.
I like the way they made the last side only be 11 minutes. This is the side with "Stairway to Heaven", which is the song most people want to hear from this album. Making the album side short helps it to sound its best and to have a nice quiet pressing. Sure enough, that side is nice and quiet. Very good.
It's fascinating to hear how much variety Dolly injects into this material. It doesn't get boring or monotonous. She deploys many different tones to her voice and puts a lot of "acting" and emotion into her singing. This is a good record, not as good as "Little Sparrow", in my opinion, but anyone who enjoys Dolly Parton will enjoy this album. I plan on spinning it often. - Probably the release I am most disappointed with yet. I should note that the actual music here is great, and the discs themselves warrant no complaints, but it's the presentation that does. This artwork is fuzzy, not to the same level of bad as the "For God and Country" and "Pure & Simple" releases, but still fuzzy. It's also not a gatefold which is really weird to me considering all of the 2LP albums in the main VMParton line have been gatefolds so far. I'm glad the music is good at least, but the packaging is weak for the price we've paid.
- Edited one year agoThere isn't much consistency in the quality of these newer (post 2000) Dolly VMP releases. The Little Sparrow and Blue Smoke releases were gorgeous. Really high quality images, lovely hardback gatefolds. Then with the Backwoods Barbie release the quality started to go downhill a bit with the flimsy gatefold, and this one is just a plain wide sleeve which is slightly disappointing. It does look as if the Better Day VMP is going to be a gatefold though.
The music and vinyl itself however is stunning. - The artwork is pretty low quality even by VMP standards, but it’s what’s inside that really counts and to me the gorgeous coloring and fantastic sound quality make up for the fuzzy art. A tad bit overpriced for what it is but still a good press, glad to see this finally on vinyl!
- It’s a shame that once again this is a very bare bones release. It’s great that these albums are finally being issued on vinyl but the artwork is poorly sourced, features no insert, no inner sleeves, no gatefold, no credits, and the price point doesn’t reflect how budget these releases are either. There are essential pieces of an album release missing here as has been the case with most if not all of the VMP Dolly releases.
