I found this lp really difficult to listen to: a very rough and raw sound with swathes of grating distortion, grit and grime. Amongst many other genres, I listen to some black metal, so it is not that I can't appreciate lo fi. I found this so harsh sounding that I ditched the album. My other Flaming Lips lps can also be heavy on the distortion, but they sound comparatively listenable compared to this. I guess maybe it was recorded and mastered for unrevealing hifis as the commentor below notes?

debilitating surface noise all over side 2, such a shame because otherwise its a great package, and the vinyl master sounds really good when there isn't any surface noise.
Edit: I was just listening to the album digitally and the surface noise is actually part of the mix, now I feel like an idiot.

This is one of the nicest packages I've come across. Very sturdy sleeve. Vinyl sounds incredible. This album's production is NASTY.

There's evidently more copies of the mispress than the 100 stated, unless some people have wrongly listed owning this version.

This album sounds delicious on vinyl. The dark nature of the album really reveals itself beautifully. Definitely worth revisiting if it didn't pull you in immediately after it was released. This is a grower.

This is my favourite Flaming Lips record. It's just so fucking intense and aggressive in its sound. The production is both masterful and sloppy. It seems to have been given a very rough, unfinished kind of sound. But it's totally intentional and this makes it all the better. Honestly, if you have a high end hi-fi, don't play this record through that. The more detail you can hear in the sound, the worse the listening experience is. Play it through something basic, but loud. I think it sounds much better this way.

And when you get to the final track, 'Watching the Planets'. Turn it up all the way. Because that song is the soundtrack to the fucking apocalypse!!

Vinyl sounds great to me. Although it lacks the "special" feeling that all albums that came before had. I have a feeling that this was the first Flaming Lips vinyl release that didn't get a dedicated vinyl mastering. I have original pressings all the way back to "Transmissions.." and every album up through "At War With the Mystics" just simply sounds better on vinyl. I'm not saying Embryonic sounds worse on vinyl, I'm just saying it's nothing special. It just doesn't have that same depth that previous albums have.

As for the album itself, this is quite possibly one of the greatest Flaming Lips albums ever recorded. I put this above "At War With the Mystics" and "Yoshimi".

Anyone know if the US and Europe 2LP,one blue, one yellow + CD releases are in fact the same release? (Releases 2031246 and 2054096) My edition has "printed in the U.S.A." on the LP sleeve, CD cardboard sleeve and the CD itself has "Made in U.S.A." written on it. The LPs on the other hand have "Manufactured in Germany" on the label.

Ok either I'm color blind, or maybe I'm just the one cool kid with a generic black double lp.. because there isn't a release on here that fits that description. I would make a release page myself, but god forbid I screw it up.. anybody care to help a brotha out?
