Notes

The Man Who Sold the World is the third studio album by the British rock musician David Bowie.

Recording began in April 1970 at Trident Studios in London. Originally released on November 4, 1970 on Mercury in the United States, this album had a variety of different covers, although the official cover is now believed to be the April 1971 UK cover.

The German Mercury edition contains some extra music at the conclusion of the album - as the last track fades out a short section of an earlier track "Saviour Machine" is heard. Evidence of this being the original intention can be deduced by it also appearing very faintly and much briefer on the RCA editions.

While the drums are a bit weak and buried in the mix, the bass is freaking insane on this original stamped Mercury pressing and the moog and guitar is heard note by note. "She Shook Me Cold" sounds like an entirely different song here, especially the instrumental break, which is straight up bass to the face. The downfall with this pressing is The Supermen, which sounds very bad, muddy sound, and difficult to find without IGD. Like others are saying, please make sure that the seller is selling the real thing and not a bootleg if you're looking for this pressing.

This album is a lesson in collecting and truly opened my eyes to variants. I love having the bootleg version of this album, as I later found out. The mystery of its origin makes it even more endearing and collectible. I don’t regret spending $20 on it 15 years ago.
It’s not that awful sounding either.

Huh... I picked this up at the local shop. I'm a little surprised he didn't tell me that it was the boot. I guess I should have done my reseach first. It appears that I have the first pirate, it sounds okay, not great, but between tracks you can hear a weird mechanical hum.

Edit to add that mine doesn't have the 2 seconds missing in Madmen.

2nd edit to not offend my rsg...

I had to bring it back to the records shop, as the last minutes of "after all", end of side 1, has loud crackles as if it was a very old record (though I bought it new and sealed)
Indeed, the bass is very loud on this release, I wonder if it was a Visconti mix! as the bass overshadows the guitars! ... which I think is not respectful to Ronson's work!

This is probably the worst sounding album I've ever bought new. I generally avoid picture disks for this very reason but this is an exceptionally terrible pressing and an embarrassment to Bowie legacy.

Excellent sounding pressing. You often get very good value for your money with these early 70s German repressings instead of going for the more expensive originals.

Just picked up a used copy of this during a trip to Sheffield, and even with some clicks and pops between tracks, this is a very dynamic pressing. The bass sounds better than any copy of this I've heard on vinyl or CD, lots of clarity, a little sibilance on some vocals, but mostly a really clean bass depth that gives the songs a lot of punch. This is my favorite Bowie record, a bridge between Syd Barrett and Black Sabbath, and to me this pressing can't be beat. Give it a try if you see it around.

Just bought a copy by mistake, definitely had a punch hole in it and hand etched numbers in dead wax
Sounds kinda clear? If it wasn’t distorted like crazy. Just keep your eye out y’all lol

I have one if interested. The record is broken so I'm selling for cover only. However After All on side a and Supermen on side b seem fine the crack only effects the first 3 songs on each side. Ask for questions. Cover is not perfect btw.
Not saying this to sell my copy, I want my copy really, but this didnt sound bad at all. I've had this before discogs ever existed and never knew it was a bootleg till I looked it up on here.
