Benny Carter And His Orchestra – Further Definitions

Four heroes converged for a saxophone summit and the results are spectacular. Rouse, Carter, Woods, and Hawkins, what more could you ask for? How about Philly Joe on drums and Jimmy Garrison on bass? Check.

These guys burn it up, each outdoing the one before on solos and trading. The energy is palpable. Arrangements are tight and well written for four woodwind voices.

Of course Hawk tears up "Body And Soul", 22 years later. Yer gonna wanna stick around for that one. "Honeysuckle Rose" is also a big-time favorite here.

I'm so used to RVG recordings, that this one has a completely different feel, very crisp highs and more than just soloists are bathed in reverb. Beautifully mixed and the piano sounds very natural. Hot master makes this one loud record.

An enjoyable listen. 3.5 stars.

Amazing that you can still find this in the wild. Gatefold. Beautiful warm sound. I grabbed a Vital Vinyl for cheap, which sounds okay, but this is noticeably warmer and fuller. Wish I'd caught onto Speakers Corner earlier.

A superb sounding record. Excellent pressing with no surface noise and the music is wonderful. Coleman Hawkins really shines and I’m loving the bass playing of Jimmy Garrison here.

First class jazz in the name of tradition. Four saxophones and four rhythm sections. Two pieces of prevoius 30´s recordings from Hawkins and Carter in style. Classic recording. This one was not recorded by RVG. For funs of RVG the sound is different that most of IMP records. For this style of jazz very nice, oriented more to the classic 50´s. I appreciate bit lower volume of cutting. Pressing of this 90´s reissues is not bad. I am very satisfied. Like most of this " Cascuna IMP 90´s " reissue - highly recommended.

Info at the bottom of the label: "A Product of ABC Records, Inc. New York, N.Y. 10019," indicates that this is the third variation of the Impulse label, which was used from 1966-1967.

My copy of this pressing sounds pretty good, the bass has nice depth. The highs are rolled-off which I don't mind at all. The brass section can pierce slightly on the loudest sections, which is my only criticism.
