Notes
Young Americans is the ninth from 26 studio albums (1967-2016) by British rock musician David Bowie, recorded August 1974 – January 1975 and released in 1975 on the RCA Records label. Bowie calls the album his own protest album.
Musically, he left the rock sound of his previous albums and recorded Young Americans within a week at Sigma Sound Studios in Philadelphia with the help of mostly African American soul and funk musicians and John Lennon.
The album was remastered several times over the years. The first of these was in 1991 as part of Rykodisc's reissue campaign of the David Bowie catalog, including the non-album single "John, I'm Only Dancing (Again)" and the outtakes "Who Can I Be Now?" and "It's Gonna Be Me" as bonus tracks. This remaster additionally includes alternate mixes of "Win", "Fascination", and "Right"; according to former Rykodisc engineer Jeff Rougvie, this was not an intentional decision on Bowie's part, but was rather the result of the label not cross-referencing the tapes with the original LP. The alternate mix of "Fascination" was also previously included on Sound + Vision because of this error. In 1997, Rykodisc reissued the album on a gold CD as part of their Au20 line; sources vary as to whether or not this release reinstated the original mixes of the affected songs.
The second remaster was as part of The David Bowie Series in 1999 by EMI, with US distribution by Virgin. This release lacked any bonus tracks, featured the original mixes of "Win", "Fascination", and "Right", and used digital processing to remove tape hiss. Along with the other albums in the series, it was reissued by Parlophone, who inherited the rights to the Bowie catalog following the dissolution of EMI in 2012.
The third and most recent remaster was in 2016 by Parlophone as part of the box set Who Can I Be Now? [1974-1976], also lacking bonus tracks and using the 1974 mixes of "Win", "Fascination", and "Right". The bonus tracks from the Rykodisc release were instead featured on The Gouster, an early version of Young Americans exclusive to the set. The remaster of Young Americans would also receive a standalone release the following year.

Reviews
- Edited one month agoGreat packaging and, most importantly, pressing quality and mastering. I don't have an original to compare to but the vinyl is absolutely silent, mostly flat and very detailed and dynamic (Ortofon 2M Black).
In the last 2 years Optimal has been producing the most consistent quality pressings. Completely on par (perhaps better than) RTI and Quality. - I guess the reason this album doesn't always get the love it deserves is because most Bowie fans lean towards the rock side of things and didn't want a funk/soul album from him. Personally I love it just as much as the rest of his 70s output, the only misstep perhaps being the inclusion of Across The Universe, which i always felt sits a bit awkwardly within the album. But this original UK press sounds fabulous and John Lennon playing guitar on a track like Fame is just cool as hell.

Boom. What a great sound reissue! Tape one cut top notch.- Bought this in an official record store in 2017 and just found out it is an unofficial release. It sounds fine btw and I cannot go back since the record store closed a couple of years ago.

all in all it has pretty good quality around but i still prefer the mix on the ryko remaster, but this has the correct takes for a couple of songs including the title track- This pressing sounds terrific. Not my favorite Bowie album, but no complaints on the sound quality of this pressing.
- Edited 8 months agoAs far as remasters go, & let's face it folks most of them are etchy (harsh), compressed & peak limited (unless they are done by Bob Ludwig, who incidentally is retired now☹️😢😫😭) this release is very, very good👍👍
You can turn this one up to realistic (loud) listening levels & your ears wont bleed...f⁕⁕king excellent!!😁🤘🤘 referencing Young Americans (LP, Album) RCA-6285
Excellent release - the sound is deep and smooth, cool matte cover, silent surface. Very happy with this one.- There are currently 5 releases of Young Americans shown in their Discogs listing title as having "MainMan Logo" & "Stereo Labels". One David Bowie - Young Americans has the "Stereo" only on Side 1. Three of the other four David Bowie - Young Americans, David Bowie - Young Americans & David Bowie - Young Americans all have points of difference but have the same printing credit (Robert Stace). This release David Bowie - Young Americans matches mine on 5 of the variations: 1) MainMan logo on rear sleeve, 2) Stereo on labels, 3) SHOREPAK printing credit on rear sleeve, 4) RS 1006 A/B to far right on labels & 5) PN on matrix/runout etching. However, it doesn't appear to have the faintly-printed RS 1006 STEREO on the sleeve front top-right. Question: is that detail missing from this listing (front sleeve image is not clear enough to confirm) or should I add a new listing? Thoughts?
