Aeternus – ...And So The Night Became

What a great release, and what I like about this is that it's hard to catagorise it. Underground metal it is, heavy certainly. It's not death metal even though it has the down tuned guitars and gruff vocals, it's not black metal despite the anti religious, historical and fantasy feel, and hyper blastbeats,and it seems too heavy to be Dark metal yet it has alot of tranquil parts and small splashes of keyboards , but it has nice mixture of all three....and when I say 'nice' I mean if you like your speakers rumbled into dust, because Aeternus with their gritty downtuned guitaring, bass drum and blast beat frenzy drumming, and dark gravelly roars and humming bass, gives you a feeling of constant motion like a slow moving army, which is kind of appropriate as it seems to be themed around anti religious medieval war fare . The drumming has a nice organic sound, and in places when he isn't blasting his way through snare skins, gives us long mid-paced rumbling double bass drums . The vocals although deep and gutteral are still illegible too. Mixed together it creates an aggressive, head banging metal storm, that makes you wanna play air drums and guitar.

What I like about this is the odd touches. Theres some acoustic passages, sound effects like the flapping of wings on 'When The Crows Shadow Falls' and the very strange Holy land intro, where they give us a dark piano and keyboard soundtrack piece with the a middle eastern flavour where they also incorperate Islamic sounding call to prayer tones. That straight away gives us atmosphere that this is going to be a sort of fantasy based Unholy medieval assault on Bethlehem and all things Religious and good.
