Beastie Boys – Solid Gold Hits

I think I bought this around the time it was released, I was just starting to collect vinyl and needed to have at least something from Beastie Boys. Now I often take it to DJ gigs since all the key tracks are on it. If someone requests the Beasties there's a 95% chance it's something on here. As a compliation though it's kind of a weird listen, I have trouble figuring out why the tracks are presented in seemingly random order like this, it doesn't really flow well at all. And I agree that the bass is too loud on this thing. But it's still good value.

I just got myself this record, but not quite sure what version it is. Most of the info is same as this version (2×LP, Gatefold, same Barcodes, same info in the center labels), but different Matrix / Runout info:

Matrix / Runout (Runout Side A): 125903 A1 LS
Matrix / Runout (Runout Side B): 125903 B1 LS
Matrix / Runout (Runout Side C): 125920 C1 LS
Matrix / Runout (Runout Side D): 125920 D1 LS

And another notorious difference is that on the center labels, the "Beastie Boys" logo only has the "Beastie" written in red and the complete rhombus is white (no "Boys" written in white on a black rhombus, as on the pictures of this version).

Any ideas?

Vinyl sounds great. In my opinion, this truly has just about all their best songs. I dig it, for sure.

This is a solid release. Vinyl is of pretty good quality. Unless you are using very high end speakers or headphones, you won't hear any meaningful amount of surface noise. The dynamics are solid. Bass is deep and well-defined. The high-mids and treble is much less sharp and grating than the high res versions available on tidal and qobuz. A very nice presentation overall.

Picked up a new copy from my local record store recently. The sleeve and catalog numbers match the 2005 US pressing, however the runout groove is different, and the black text "BOYS" from the Beastie Boys logo is missing on all four labels.

Can't see anything else online about this possible repress/misprint yet. Anyone else have a newer copy that matches? I hesitate to add a 2022 press just yet!

I played this for the first time and was blown away how rich it sounded. Intergalactic sounds so good I repeated it to hear all the little bits I’d never heard before on a basic CD.

The best Beastie Boys compilation to me, sounds fairly good but a wrap on track 1 on both side of disc 1 on mine

The sound is very loud on this compilation, including occurances of clipping on some songs. I find it especially noticable on the rock songs. Other than that, it's a fine compilation and a nice, simple introduction to the band, and the videos are always a joy!

Got this as a gift. I’m content with the sound. I do think the mix/mastering is a bit on the boomy end, less crisp than the original pressings I have, but not a dealbreaker if you want a slew of hits all in one place.

I first got the US 2005 version. Was one of the worst pressings I have ever played. Muddled highs, no lows at all and avg mid range. Sounded like it was recorded off the radio, I have picture discs that sd worlds better. Ended up returning it, and trying the 2011 since I heard its much better with the european pressing, will report back once it comes in and I give it a go.
