- Edited 6 years agoIf you're looking for "You're Only Old Once" specifically, there's no need to pay through the teeth here. Jump over to Project 303 records and check out Project 005, which features that tune and a collab between Mills and Jack Wax (also a good tune). https://www.discogs.com/Steve-Mills-2-DAVE-The-Drummer-Steve-Mills-2-Jack-Wax-Youre-Only-Old-Once-Never-Get-This-Good-Again/release/8666178
As for the original release, both tunes are tasty, but "You're Only Old Once" is the real standout in my book. Thumping kicks, a hilarious sample, and a bright, vibrant torrent of classy acid combine to deliver a real brain-destroyer of a tune. Top stuff, simple as that. 5/5 and then some.
"Owsley Acid" is cool enough, and certainly features a more intense, almost angry vibe (maybe "angry" is too strong, but the track is definitely "menacing"). I place this track in the "rather good but maybe just shy of great" category. However, the tune gets major bonus points for using one of the best sample sets ever, taken from Cheech & Chong's "Up in Smoke" (the "you just ate the most acid I've ever seen anyone eat in my life" exchange, one of the greatest scenes in any stoner/drug comedy). 4/5. - You're only old once is a superb and fun piece of acid techno that is sure to rock the fuck out of any dance floor, with really good production, as would be expected of any Dave the Drummer track, and a nice crisp, clean pressing of the record. Not sure where the sample is from but is about someone snorting heroin and fits in nicely in the breakdown, but doesn't really add anything extra special to the track. The acid, bass line and percussion are spot on with the main acid riff coming in on the start of the break and being very bubbly and quickly building up until it's screaming at the end of the track.
Personal favourite track of 2008.
Top stuff from the WahWah crew.
