i really love the US exclusive songs, 'oh my' especially. I got so excited when they played it live in ny i screamed YES like it was a sports event and sarah laughed. a proud moment lol- Edited 3 years agoHonestly this sounds so much better than the 2005 press, which is a bit dull throughout and distorted in places. By contrast, the synths, the drums and the different grains of the vocals really cut through here, especially the wonderful spacious backing vocal arrangements and Sarah's glossy lead vox. The artwork is just as sharp as the original too, so this really is the best version to get.

This was given me as a free gift with a Discogs purchase, which was very kind of the seller, but I have to say that I find it a beautifully-produced set of dull hymns to banality. All or most of the songs are focused on ordinary lives lived by normal people in a city (it's clearly London), but although they sometimes approach emotional depth, they never develop a purpose or a wider story; the characters are just stuck, like beautifully-rendered characters in aspic. And they're not very interesting! The smoothness of Cracknell's vocals and the beautiful arrangements don't do anything to hide this; in fact they almost celebrate it. If you like the noise Saint Etienne make and can ignore the lyrics, this is probably great, and for that reason my favourite track on it is an instrumental, 'The Birdman of EC1', but even that annoys me because of its quirky knowing reference to the Strawberry Alarm Clock song 'The Birdman of Alcatraz', from which it removes any point detectable by the listener. If you want words doing this kind of stuff well to music, the Bevis Frond's 'He'd Be A Diamond' could beat the effect of this whole album and have pathos to spare. I may now also try to give this CD away...referencing Tales From Turnpike House (CD, Album) SVY 17580
'Dream Lover' and 'Oh My' exclusive to the US release. 'I'm Falling' is also available on the 'A Good Thing' UK 7".- Edited 19 years agoSaint Etienne switches moods as easily as most people change clothes. TALES FROM TURNPIKE HOUSE is a lovely example of how a seemingly dull topic -- suburbia -- can yield unexpected beauty. From the folk delicacy of "Sun in My Morning" to the more upbeat "Milk Bottle Symphony," Sarah Cracknell's lyrics again evoke a stunning portrait of place. "Slow Down at the Castle" calms things to a quiet boil with some beautiful strumming, while “A Good Thing” goes straight for dancefloor. The delicate “Side Streets” is a lovely bit of pop that also belies the hint of danger in the lyrics. Saint Etienne specializes in this juxtaposition: after its dreamy intro, “Last Orders for Gary Stead” becomes much rougher, almost rockabilly. Compare that to the hedonistic disco of “Stars Above Us” or the give-and-take between Cracknell and guest vocalist David Essex on “Relocate.” The album closes with the choral a cappella “Goodnight,” leading us out of our day in suburbia. Saint Etienne makes you want to visit again soon. The bonus disc definitely sounds like b-sides, mostly fun but not quite fully formed. “You Can Count on Me” is entertaining, but slight, and the same goes for the children-friendly “Let’s Build a Zoo.” “Night Owl” is a lovely lullaby, however, and a perfect capper to what proves to be another gem from Saint Etienne.
