- From ninjatunexx.com 2010:
"This week's Ninja Tune giveaway is undoubtedly the ultimate, in both senses of the word. It's one of the very few, truly iconic pieces of dance music, of the type that people still refer to in feverish tones. Despite being only five years younger than Ninja itself, it's an hour of music that sounds every bit as thrilling as it did on its original release. In an age where eclecticism in DJing is once again in vogue, we'd like to respectfully make the point that Coldcut had the idea first.
Welcome then, to Journeys By DJ. The original, the best, the mother of all mixtapes. Taking in a dizzying array of styles (jungle, techno, house, hip-hop, pop and politicised punk all get a look in,) it also features some of the brightest stars in the history of dance-music-worth-listening-to. More than just a mixtape, it was a statement of intent, and stands today as a testament to everything that's possible when music is mixed together.
The JDJ mix cemented Coldcut's reputation as dance's broadest minds and deftest mixers, and planted a seed that is flowering in the work of every DJ today, fifteen years down the line.
This version of the mix is described by Jon More as follows:
"This version was done for the re-issue in 2002. It grew out of the original, but was re-balanced and re-jigged with extra content, and in fact has different tracks in if you listen very closely. I'd call it a reinterpretation of the first. We're happy to give this away on our twentieth anniversary, as it was an important mix for us that marked a pivotal moment of our career so far. Hopefully there will be many more to come!" - The scratching on this is insane , cold cut are the GOATS , there i said it like im a 13 year old boy
- I have a white cd like the USA version with the matrix code as listed for the UK version. Unsure how to catalogue it.

- Here's a CD with historic AND musical value! I just listened back to it, all those years after NME bigged it up, causing me to go out and buy it. You know what? It was the time when NME were (most) always right!
- In a conversation I had with Strictly Kev, aka Kevin Foakes, in Sept 2019 he kindly shared the following information about this version of the mix:
"I remember that People Hold On was a problem.
...
For instance, we wanted Planet Rock and Tour De France on the original mix, but they were turned down.
...
I think that 2002 Solid Steel show was the original mix submitted to JDJ maybe or a composite of the original mix and finally released version. Yes it was made in sections and i think stitched together on an early hard disc editor although we dropped some stuff in live via ADAT as I recall. Matt was engineering and PC and I were mixing. I've not listened to it for ages so I don't recall what we did and what made the cut.
...
and yes, there were always mistakes on the track lists, even on the final release".

This mix was also rebroadcast on the Solid Steel radio show on 27th December 2012 as a 320kbps mp3.

The commercial mix is so amazing and this original / re-jigged version is also excellent and acts as a wonderful variation. I do prefer the ending with Lisa Stansfield over The Moody Boys 'Free' though. - Edited one month ago"70 Minutes Of Madness" from 1995 was a massive step forward for the DJ mix artform. Whilst this 2002 reissue has more polished production and a few different tracks, it's essentially the same as the '95 version.
Cold, eclectic and heavily produced, Coldcut showcase the diversity of leftfield dance music styles from the mid-'90s, journeying from fast drum 'n' bass (The Truper, Wagon Christ, Dillinja) and hardcore breakbeat (Pressure Drop, Hookian Mindz), to mid-paced breaks (Philorene, Jedi Knights, Gescom, Love Lee, Red Snapper), techno (Plastikman), DJ cut-ups (Coldcut), proto big beat (Mantronix, Masters At Work), trip hop (Photek) and hip hop (BDP), to chilled downtempo (Bedouin Ascent, Air Liquide, DJ Food), dub reggae (The Moody Boys) and ambient (Harold Budd). Such eclecticism of genres and speeds was groundbreaking for a DJ mix at the time.
The mix was also trailblazing for its extensive recombination of music to create new hybrids: there's a brilliant drum 'n' bass reversioning of Junior Reed's dub reggae "One Blood" (combined with The Truper); techno and downtempo reworkings of Coldcut's own "Beats And Pieces" (mashed with Plastikman and Air Liquide); an original ambient remix of Joanna Law's cover of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" (blended with Luke Slater); and a downtempo revision of Jhelisa's "Friendly Pressure" (overlayed onto DJ Food).
The editing and mixing is skilful throughout, with the occasional scratching, use of samples (including religious and political monologues) and variety of styles and speeds keeping things fresh. There is perhaps not enough variety of moods and eras however, with the focus on mid-'90s experimental and alternative dance creating a consistently dark and esoteric soundtrack of varying musical quality that can make for difficult listening at times.
But despite these limitations, this is a mix that was revolutionary for its eclectic musical recombination. The likes of DJ Shadow & Cut Chemist, 2 Many DJs, DJ Food & DK, Andy Smith, Liam Howlett, The Psychonauts, Hexstatic and others would go on to take this eclectic mix and mash template to new musical heights, but it's important to recognise who created it in the first place. (8) - Twenty years old and still a relevant and hugely engaging mix. It should be noted that this was not a two turntables live mix as suggested but rather one of the first computer edited mixes using a number of tape edits spliced together in a multi track studio. For the story go to the Quietus and read about how it was done. A pioneering mix that took technology forward and demonstrated that technology is a great tool but its all about drawing together the right tunes.
- Edited 9 years agoBought my cassette the week it came out- still not a mix out there that can rival the selection & the imagination. No words can sum this up. Its a shame we are accompanied by a new generation of "skippers" (non listeners that will just skip through a mix looking for quick highlights, blissfully unaware of the rewards that await the relaxed patient listener & completely missing everything) however thats what makes this "strikly" (Kev) for true music lovers. Just look at that track selection! 250/10.
