Notes
Monster is the ninth from fifteenth studio albums (1983-2011) by the American alternative rock band R.E.M.., recorded October 1993 – May 1994 and released in September 1994 on Warner Bros. Records.
Co-produced by the band and Scott Litt and recorded in four different recording studios, Monster was an intentional stylistic shift from the group's preceding albums, Out Of Time (1991) and Automatic For The People (1992), consisting of loud, distorted guitar tones and simple song arrangements. Singer Michael Stipe's lyrics on the album dealt with the nature of celebrity, which he sang while assuming various characters.
Performed by: Bill Berry (2) - drums / Peter Buck - electric guitar / Mike Mills - bass guitar / Michael Stipe - lead vocals
Led by the successful single "What's the Frequency, Kenneth?", Monster debuted at number one in the United States and at least seven other countries. Four further singles were released from the album in 1995, including UK Top 20 hits "Bang and Blame", "Strange Currencies" and "Tongue". The album received generally positive reviews from critics. In 1995, the band promoted the record with its first concert tour since 1989. Although the tour was commercially successful, it was marked by several personal health problems. The album's follow-up, New Adventures in Hi-Fi, was mostly recorded during the tour.

I bought this sealed around the 2010s, nice piece of art for the book self.referencing Monster (LP, Album) 9 45740-1
Hard to believe this is 31 years old. I purchased my copy in 2004, sealed for $20. Miss those days. I was in seventh grade when it came out, which is probably why I liked it so much, versus most longtime REM fans who apparently didn't. Anyway, this pressing is very good. I compared to the 2019 version and this one edges the newer one out, ever so slightly. I also left a review for that one, if you want to check it out.referencing Monster (LP, Album) 9 45740-1
Regarding 'reissues have no soul below'...In my experience, this is generally true but not always. After due diligence and a roll of the dice, you sometimes discover old wine in new bottles. And it tastes good and warms the soul.referencing Monster (CD, Album) 9 45740-2
In hindsight, a very good album. Lots of tremelo. Some buried vocals. I've never heard it on vinyl. I feel "Monster" is an underrated gem of the mid-90s.- This pressing is listed as c side and d side, and the labels on the wax itself says that, but I'm not seeing anything about a side and b side. The original LP does not seem to refer to itself that way. Is it some kind of in joke that I'm not getting? Anyone know the story behind this?

Great songs, but the heavy compression used in the mastering of this album makes it unlistenable for me in a home stereo environment. I would go for the vinyl instead as it has much better sound quality.- Edited 5 months agoNot sure what the point of the remix is, the original mix sounds much better; more guitar texture and life. The drums are also superior on the original mix. The remix is dull. The only bright spot on the remix is that the vocals are more forward and isolated. Good pressing quality and decent fidelity considering this was never even in the ballpark of being considered an audiophile recording, and will always remain as such. The jacket is rather cheaply made, but this is a worthwhile addition to the collection.
- Edited 8 months agoOriginal sounds much better than the remix. The remix seems to lack most of the layers including instruments? Really odd. Original has a bit of noise - the remix for me is full of static and pops and crackles throughout.
