Notes
Joni Mitchell’s debut album. The cover of the original release was cropped poorly, meaning that Mitchell’s painting, where the seagulls spell the album’s title, was incomplete. Reprise apparently didn’t notice at the time, so the album was known as 'Joni Mitchell' for many years, even though the full title appears in the cover artwork of almost all editions. Later copies have 'Song To A Seagull' on the spine and/or labels/CD onbody.
Side A of the album is subtitled 'I Came To The City', with side B subtitled 'Out Of The City And Down To The Seaside'.
Before the album Mitchell had already written songs that were hits for other artists - including 'Both Sides Now' and 'Chelsea Morning' for Judy Collins, 'Eastern Rain' for Fairport Convention and 'Urge for Going', 'The Circle Game' and 'Tin Angel' for Tom Rush - but she chose to record none of them for her debut.

Poor pressing and still sounds awful (sorry Joni!)
Side 1 was near perfect playback but side 2 has a near constant rotational non fill type of rustling/ripping sound through the side. Theres no tics or pops so this is some kind of baked in defect. It also remains by far her worst sounding record as well as being not a patch on her work a few years later so it doesnt pain me much to return it on all grounds.
Just another modern pressing reject!

It's a lovely remastering of the album. However, I actively dislike the mix of Night in the City. It sounds flat compared to the original mastering. This pressing is worth having criticism aside, because it is a significant improvement overall.
Minimal surface noise and quality packaging.
Listening to a needle drop of this 2021 remix. Sounds wonderful.
I remember listening to the CD in the late 80’s and being frustrated in knowing there were absolutely brilliant songs underneath the flat production.

My copy unfortunately has static on the first two songs of each side, so I might have to get it replaced. Has anybody else had this problem? Other than that, it's a gorgeous reissue and the new mix of the album sounds beautiful.
If Joni Mitchell intended her debut to be titled Song For A Seagull, & in fact it is in the artwork, despite the label messing it up, then her wish should be respected as after all, it is HER album. Therefore suggest ALL subs be corrected to Song For A Seagull. Anything else is obviously wrong
Edited 2 years agoWonderful record, I have this copy in NM and it’s a loud and heavy pressing, it sounds great.
Amazing songwriting here and a clean production. This is my favourite Joni album with Blue next.
Hard to pull a nice clean crackle free copy these days tho…..- Great selection of songs plus David Crosby produced it as well
- "Song to a Seagull" is a song on this album. I don't see anywhere that it is the title of the album. The CORRECT title seems to be "JONI MITCHELL" period.
