This seldom heard version of “Wrong Side Of Memphis” was recorded several years before the very different CD version was released. The mood and sound here is darker, more lo-fi and more sparse than anything that came later, but there’s also a warmth, beauty and ambience (especially the vocals) that makes it utterly unique. Many of his best songs come from these sessions and the versions here are definitive. One of the best debut albums of the late 20th century and one that is way, waay overdue for a vinyl release.
