Suicide ‎– Suicide: Alan Vega · Martin Rev

Genre:

Notes:
Suicide: Alan Vega · Martin Rev is the second studio album by Suicide. The album was produced by Ric Ocasek of The Cars for ZE Records. The album was released in May 1980 and was included as on of NME's top albums of the year. Both Vega and Rev released solo albums following the album's release.

On the original LP artwork the names Alan Vega and Martin Rev appear prominently on the cover above "Suicide". This ambiguity has led to considerable confusion over the precise title of the album ever since it was released. It has been referred to by different sources variously as "Alan Vega - Martin Rev" and/or "Suicide" and occasionally Vega and Rev have been interpreted as the artists, as opposed to Suicide. "Suicide: Alan Vega · Martin Rev" was used by David Nobahkt in his book 'Suicide: No Compromise' (2004).

The album was re-issued by Mute/Blast First in 1999 with new cover art and this time formally titled "The Second Album". The reissue featured three bonus tracks: "Super Subway Comedian", "Dream Baby Dream", and "Radiation" as well as a bonus disc of live material recorded at New York City in the Museum for Living Artists in 1975 entitled "The First Rehearsal Tapes".

"On Suicide's First Rehearsal Tapes, recorded in 1975, Alan Vega and Martin Rev create minimalist aural structures, traces of which would surface on their eponymous debut album, released on the Red Star label in late 1977.
"These songs are not a sketchpad of semi-formed ideas. The First Rehearsal Tapes comprise an audio diary of two men out in the ether, measuring themselves as evolving individual artists and as a unit who would rely on inseparability to realize their unique and often confrontational mass in the decades to come. What the tapes also reveal is that Vega and Rev were compositionally ambitious, capable of melody and form, while resisting definition as they headed further into uncharted territory.
"The First Rehearsal Tapes afford the listener a glimpse into the creative process of two groundbreaking, true art warriors with their swords and shields leaning against the practice room wall. To understand the absolute brilliance of Suicide's first album as well as their sonic adventures that followed, you have to start here with their earliest recordings."
– Henry Rollins (excerpt from the liner notes).

I had the off centre b-side label, sounds pretty good though. No clicks or pops and the music sounds clear and loud. I use a static gun and discwasher brush before every play.

I am pretty sure this is a bootleg. Print quality of the back cover is kind of bad. Sound is pretty good though. Plus nice vinyl colour.

Finally back in my collection after having lost the original LP years ago. If there was ever a timely reissue of a seminal album look no further.

Just bought a copy of this version sold as mint and it does not sound great. Suspect it's a bootleg. Obviously could just be my copy but beware...

Though some kind of weird disco-music an absolut must-have in my opinion out-tip Touch me and Shaddazz. And if they wanted to be more commercial this music balks against the superficial product charakter of many disco products (probaly it has more in common with the original NYC disco-scene, but I don´t know). Voluntary or not they turn that into something deeper more arty. Great !! Similar like the second longplayer of the Talking Heads
