Notes
Released on 16 November 1979 as 7".
The initial run of 10,000 pressings came in a textured sleeve. The subsequent run of another 20,000 pressings came in textured or flat (untextured) sleeves. Until 17 July 1981, 38.245 7" records were pressed in total.
Other differentiation criteria:
The cut-out on the rear is either bevelled or rounded or there is none.
The glue flaps are either all straight or rounded at the bottom.
The G+L is either white or purple.
First editions (A1 / B1) were cut by Graeme Durham at the Sound Clinic, while later editions (A2 / B1) were cut by George "Porky" Peckham.
Editions were pressed by WEA (S-x) or Lyntone (LYN-xxxx).
Issued as 12" in February 1981. According to Tony Wilson "due to continuing unhappiness with cut on 'Novelty'".
Despite high expectations, the single only charted in the UK Independent charts.
Please note there is an Italian Base Record pressing of Material - Ciquri / Detached that was inadvertently packaged (with sleeve and labels) as their version of this release.

Love this Porky Prime Cut. No other pressing can compete in my ears (and system)!referencing Transmission (12", 45 RPM, Single) FAC 13.12
Based on my experience with this pressing, it is extremely bass-heavy to the point that every other instrument (namely drums and vocals) sound like they are under a blanket. However, if you adjust your EQ settings to bring up the treble, it is a good sounding pressing.referencing Transmission (12", 45 RPM, Single) FAC 13.12
Purchased this new...still NM...just such a fantastic sounding record. Nothing like 45rpm 12" singles. Vocals and instruments clear and centered properly. Just awesome.. and btw I am not selling it...ever.- I've got 2 copies of the reissue now with the exact same flaw - a nasty edge warp/blip where the needle jumps out of the groove at the beginning of the track. On each side. If I place the needle about 40-50 seconds (guess) into the song it tracks ok the rest of the way. I've played over 500 records on my current setup and never had the needle jump out of the groove before. Should I keep returning them for replacements? or is it hopeless.

It's a mystery how no joy Division fans have not got this pressing. It sounds perfect between highs and lows and mid level is bang on. Remember. It was this track on Tony Wilsons show and Ians dancing that launched the band. - My copy has no warp, embossed cover is a nice touch- I like how they've been so faithful reproducing the original art and sleeves of this release. The sound is fantastic- 12" 45s are the way to go to listen to the joy division singles. It is incomparable. A touch of light surface noise in the beginning of each side, but it's drowned out once the music gets going. Honestly this comes as a close second to the Atmosphere 12" in terms of sound quality, and that record blew my mind the first time I spun it, which really says something. I think this is going for about $12-14 on Amazon right now- definitely worth a grab!
- Sounds excellent- Textured sleeve print is crisp and vibrant- definitely the better art variant than the 12”!
- Edited 3 years agoNice reissue, love the pressing. It was the first single out of the three that got mailed to me, so was excited and opened it. Sadly, it was warped. Nevertheless, I cleaned it and span the record, and even tho it looked funny jumping up and down, the needle didn't jump out of it's groove! Still, it looked also really scary and probably won't play it that often, but it's a nice addition to my collection.
P.S.: The other singles weren't warped and after cleaning sounded fantastic just like this one. The warp was probably a rare thing.
