Hype text from the label:

When Mike Truman, Chris Healings and Lee Mullin released their debut album ‘Wide Angle’, it surprised anyone who thought that dance music couldn’t be clever, challenging and musically astute.

‘Wide Angle’ had been over a year in the making and was born of Hybrid's frustration with the narrow horizons of British dance music and its structural predicability. They wanted to make it more melodic, more imaginative, bigger and deeper than it had ever been before. So they went from Swansea to London, Moscow, Paris and New York, gathering material for a set of startlingly innovative tracks.

That was then, and in the past nine months since the album was originally released, things have changed quite dramatically. Hybrid were received as one of the most acclaimed new bands of 1999, ‘Wide Angle’ collected an abundance of album of the month reviews and the guys ended 1999 on a high with a ‘Best Dance Act’ award at the Miami WMC, a slot on the Muzik magazine UK tour and a ‘Best Live Act’ nomination at the Muzik magazine awards; all the more outstanding considering Hybrid had only a handful of live gigs under their belt at that time.

Hybrid live includes the aforementioned trio plus drummer/percussionist Al Madge and scratch pervert Jamie Griffiths, who add both energy and strength to the show. They have gone on to hone their gigs to near perfection, with live dates as far afield as Mount Fuji in Japan, Miami Beach, San Francisco, Ibiza, Sydney, Taiwan, New York, Singapore and Panama City, their global presence getting stronger with every dynamic live show performed and fans converted to the sound of rapturous applause.

DJing also, has allowed Hybrid to immerse themselves in a broad range of musical styles. 'You draw all these influences in, and use them to create new sounds,' explains Truman, 'everything that we've listened to over the years has been absorbed and used in some way,' he reflects. With the newly performing Hybrid Interactive Soundsystem, it’s another way for Hybrid to make their presence heard; where 2 Welshmen, 3 keyboards, 4 computers and a box of records combine to create a electrifying soundclash. And with tastes and skills as eclectic as Hybrid's, there's plenty of scope for the wildest kind of experimentation.

So to embrace a heady 12 months, ‘Wide Angle’ morphs into a ‘Wider Angle’ special edition release of the album to include a live CD recorded on a recent tour of Japan which captures both the vigour and passion that has been experienced by all who have seen them live and bringing into the living room for those who have yet to catch them.

Their current single, ‘Kid 2000’, a reworking of a Pretenders track featuring Chrissie Hynde and their first foray into the top 40 is also included on the CD as a bonus track, along with sought after and previously unreleased tracks ‘Kill City’ and ‘Altitude’.

One of the peaks of breakbeat grandiosity and actually the kind of soundtrack I expected to listen to when I went to see The Matrix, it works because of the tension between the different elements: for what I read in interviews Hybrid got a full orchestra almost by chance and they learnt how to arrange almost on the spot. And they also got Julee Cruise, who delivers her best and rawest, putting the emotion to 11. All the parties involved are doing their best in a very very busy set of tracks, and this makes a common favourite of the genre.

Still, it is not that the orchestra is good, or that the rhythm programming is good, or that the vocals are good. It is that all of the elements by themselves are excellent, that there is an air of excitement around and that somehow the mixing of all of it also works. Just listen to it.

This album is a unique work that combines Break Beats, Progressive House/Trance and orchestral elements with a heavy nod towards string arrangements. All fused together, Hybrid create a cohesive journey that’s heavily emotive, at times dance-floor orientated, and ultimately, utterly brilliant. Put simply, it’s an electronic masterpiece of the highest calibre. Even 21 years on it still holds it’s own against current dance music. Every track stands on its own, with no fillers.

I could go on and on about how great it is, but will instead urge those that may be unfamiliar with it to give it a listen.

A seminal progressive breaks album which proves that the British electronic scene was pure bliss back then.
"Opening Credits" starts smoothly with violin harmonies, the kind of intro that Rob Dougan given the context of incorporating it in an electronic music release.
A prominent instrument amongst the beats in the piano, featured in several tunes sich as "If I Survive" and "Beachcoma", with the latter also featuring saxophone notes that remind to some BT productions, especially in his LP "ESCM". Of course, you also have the orchestra of "Finished Symphony" which is arguably the most accomplished, well-produced track of "Wide Angle".
At last, you have the vocals. Even If I prefer music without lyrics, these ones match very well with the instrumentals. Mostly female, some vocals are kinda similar to those heard in Paul Oakenfold's work, such as the splendid "I Know".

The low-pitched acid lines at the beginning is a spoiler of the upcoming development of the nu-skool breaks that will be a big part of the 2000's breakbeat style.
I love the loopy sounds in the beginning of "Snyper" (they start around 15 seconds forward).
"Sinequanon" features interesting French lyrics on laidback instrumentals. I particularly love the two last minutes with the background chorus and the chill guitar notes.
Concerning "High Life", it would have fit perfectly in BT's "Movement In Great Life".

However, I'm personally less enthusiasted by "Fatal Beating" and the Red Square reprise of "Attitude". The vocals of the former do not leave me as charmed as the rest of the CD, but that just me.
Despite that, it's no doubt that the quality of production of this album is masterful. You don't have to turn up the volume that much, there's no slizzing effects, all the layers are clear and coherent.

If the musical beauty of BT, Underworld, Orbital, Oakenfold or Rob Dougan ain't unknown to you, then "Wide Angle" is a serious extra product to acquire.

Hybrid's first release is arguably their finest, with incredibly well produced breaks as expected. With the eternal 'I Know' and 'If I Survive', Hybrid comes out guns blazing. This American release has Kill City, Altitude and Kid 2000 which are all nice editions, Kid 2000 being particularly good. For a fan of progressive breaks this is a must buy (although you probably already have it!).

This is one of the best albums ever made for the electronic music world. The Hybrid boys from Wales never cease to amaze me with the very melodic break beats that excite the mind.

Best tracks include:

If I Survive - Great lyrics and vocals. All around great song to listen to.

I Know - With Lyrics and Vocals by Julie Cruise, very nice laid back tune.

Beachcoma - Great building track with some decent scratching.

Dreaming Your Dreams - Beginning has great breakbeat intro and then it dives off into a more symphonic and melodic piece. Very good tune.

Sinequanon - Latin for "that which cannot be with out" or "the essential element", this track is a french vocal trip hop song with a great lounge and chill beat. Lyrics about how the person lives for the weekend to go out and party.

Finished Symphony - Probably the most known song on this album. Has been featured by John Digweed. Song has LOTS of strings in it and is all around a great tune. One of the best ever written.
