- Edited one month agoGlad they included Mike’s vocal version of The Girl I Knew Somewhere on the bonus LP.
- This 1981 Japanese pressing of HEADQUARTERS sounds mighty fine, with ample low end, a punchy mix, and a wide, robust soundstage. Sounds more full than most other versions I've heard. My copy plays like new, with no surface noise of note.

Love it! Had a beat up copy as a little kid I got from a friend, who stole it from his sister. When she found out I refused to give it back. “It was a present. Go yell at your brother”
I remember playing “Zilch” a lot! And my sister and I laughing every time. Looking back it may be the song that opened the neural pathways to enjoy “weird” music in the future.referencing Headquarters (LP, Album, Stereo) COS-103
I have a version that I cannot find here on discogs, TZRM-8692? Does anyone else have this one? Or know what this version is?referencing Headquarters (LP, Album, Mono) RD-7886
I have the producers cover with the incorrect photo tag of Hank Cicalo- Already sold out on Rhino's page, but Micky Dolenz has a few signed copies available on his personal site for $149.95: https://micky-dolenz.myshopify.com/products/the-monkees-inside-the-headquarters-super-deluxe-edition
- I finally unsealed my box, pulled out CD 2 - January 1967 Headquarters sessions to spin on the road. “The Girl I Knew Somewhere” in its demo and 2 different mono mix forms are okay. But, frankly, the rest of this disc was a bore. To be sure, it’s unlike the Beach Boys Pet Sounds Sessions release, in which, for a portion of it, the producers compiled a sequence of tracks to present effectively a narrative of the building of the monumental recording, “God Only Knows”. Each subsequent track furthers the story of the shaping of that song, with Brian Wilson frequently stopping the playing, steering and correcting the session musicians. Headquarters, otoh, is not the epic vision of a single, gifted genius, so I suppose that automatically lowers its compelling-ness factor. Still, I would like to have at least heard studio chatter and ideas, if they were recorded at all, by the band during these sessions. So, so far, this is no Pet Sounds sessions or Stooges Fun House sessions. Insight-wise, it’s not even akin to the massive Zimmy – The Cutting Edge 1966-1966 bootleg box, much of which I was surprised to find to be a tedious slog, although it does give us an historical audio account of Dylan’s composing and refining of the electric years songs. Sorry, CD 2 has no repeat listening value … for me, that is. I hope the February and March sessions tracks fare better and that the finished album, on CD 1, won’t be the only disc of this box I return to.
Would anyone recommend the 2000 3-CD Headquarters sessions instead? A different flavor than this box?
