From Wayne Studer's excellent 'geowayne' site:

Neil once told interviewer Randee Dawn that this track was strongly influenced by "Désenchantée," a song by French-Canadian songstress Mylène Farmer. "I met someone and fell in love with him, and we were touring in Europe and kept hearing this record.… [I]t includes the line 'disappointed once again, disenchanted, encore.'" As a result, "Disappointed" is, in Neil's own words, "My little tribute to Mylène Farmer."

Love, love, love this song! Neil Tennant, Johnny Marr, Bernard Sumner, what more could you want?!

For such a fast beat this is a melancholic song- I absolutely love it.

The fbi mix of gangster is the album version re-edited and looped to make it twice as long. It’s not a remix in the truest sense as there’s no evidence it’s been reproduced from stems or master tapes. Pointless. Add to that the lazy usa mixes of feel every beat and no wonder they flopped.

Disappointed is what I was when I listened to this release. You would think it would be great, having members of The Smiths, New Order, Pet Shop Boys, and remixed by 808 State to boot. But all I can think of whenever I listen to anything by Electronic is "there is no reason for this to exist."

The remix of Idiot Country on this one (and on the '92 reissue of the album) is much better than the original. Cleaner, groovier, more understatedly dramatic. By the way who's the soulful female vocalist on that one - the lady singing "I wanna know!" near the end of the track and so on?

This is the only place, I think, where you can get the gorgeous single mix on vinyl in good quality - the seven-inch sounds OK but not stellar whereas this 45RPM pressing across a whole side is marvellous.

Robotrock04 Each to their own I suppose. I really wasn't feeling the main song until I heard the 808 state mix. Less pop, more underground, in my opinion. The original sounds too much like a Pet Shop Boys song for my liking.

I agree you'd think 808 state with (I'm assuming) relative access to good technology would have taken the time to keep the baseline in tune when the vocal starts. It's only for a few bars though, and to be honest it gives it a bedroom-cooked vibe, in common with many hardcore tracks from that era

Beautiful song, not only one of the best songs by Electronic, but I'd go so far as to say it's one of the best songs in Bernard Sumner's, Johnny Marr's or Neil Tennant's own respective bodies of work. It's certainly an unusual single because the lead vocal is entirely by Neil with no contributions from Bernard. Neil's vocals are incredible in this song I think. The lyrics were also entirely written by Neil too and because of this it sounds more or less like a Pet Shop Boys song if you excuse Johnny Marr's guitar. Honestly, it's pretty much the best Pet Shop Boys song that never was. If it had have became one, I think it would have been viewed as one of their best songs ever. The 808 State remix I found to be a real disappointment though. I just didn't think the vocals and the melody melded together as well as they do in the original version. I was really disappointed about that actually because I am a big fan of 808 State. I think it's just one of those songs that is impossible to remix because the single version is already as good as it will be to be honest. One of my favorite songs ever!
