- Edited one month agoThis is one of the best sounding compilation albums from the Clash. It’s all here in this set . No remastered mumbo jumbo here just pure Clash rock and roll. Just crank it up and enjoy.
- This is much more comprehensive compilation of the music of The Clash, than the excellent one disc Singles Collection, which concentrates on the originally released 45 RPM vinyl singles only. The Singles Collection will get up up and running, and in touch with one of the best bands that ever walked on our planet. Purchase The Singles Collection, if you just want a sampler, as a newbie to the band. If your a Clash diehard, just keep in mind that sometimes the singles can be different from the LP versions, so no harm at all, complementing your albums with a disc of the singles.
The Story Of The Clash however digs a lot deeper, as it contains the key tracks from the crucial LPs, as well as the classic I Fought The Law, from the excellent The Cost Of Living EP.
The sound sparkles, on every single song, as it's all Remastered, so have no worries at all about the audio clarity, it's pristine, as good as it gets, and adding to the excellence is interviews with the band.
This is definitely one of the best overviews of the band that you can buy. Great liner notes and photos also. Avoidance of chronological order works brilliantly. Generally the Punk material is on CD2. The more experimental stuff is on CD 1. This makes it a great listen as you can pick styles, depending on your mood. If you would prefer to listen to The Clash chronologically, pick up the excellent 2 disc set The Essential Clash. This set, The Essential Clash has the advantage of a few rare cuts, more of The Cost Of Living EP, and has the added interest of touching on the mostly ignored Cut The Crap LP, with the inclusion of the brilliant single, This Is England.
The Story Of The Clash is also a lovely item to own as a double vinyl set, if your a collector of wax, and the last time I looked, it was not too expensive, to be totally honest however, the CD's sound much better with the crystal clear quality highlighting little bells and beats etc, that I could not pick out on my vinyl copy.
Don't worry about The Story The Clash, Volume Two, it never materialised. I think that Columbia Records housed the 2 volumes in one case as a double set, possibly as a cost cutting measure and called it Volume One, in error.
The Story Of The Clash is exactly what you are getting here, essential powerful stuff. It's a joy listening to the evolution of how the band infused, Reggae, Dub, Rockabilly, World Music etc with the energy and attitude of Punk, and rounded it into a cohesive, unique Clash sound.
Purchase The Story Of The Clash with confidence, I'm pretty certain that you will enjoy the musical adventure of this experimental game changing band, who did it all, and made our world a better place.

If you would prefer to listen to the bands music in chronological order, check out the 2 disc set The Essential Clash, but do you know what, I recommend collecting both, and The Singles Collection also, obviously a few duplications but all 3 of these releases are awesome, and will cover the main bases, and will serve you well, until you buy all of the studio albums.
Quite simply, this is some of the best music that was ever recorded, on our planet, and is totally essential.
The evolution of the Punk Reggae Dub infusion, as the band matured and became more confident, adventurous and open to world music, is a total joy. The band mastered this by taking risks and chances but eventually acquired a rounded, cohesive groove, that was experimental, but eventually The Clash achieved what all groups want more than anything else, a distinctive, unique, individual sound. Only the biggest legends in music create this, The Clash worked very hard, kept an open mind, and deserve there legendary status, as musical revolutionary pioneers.

Kind of crazy this best of compilation isn’t more sought after. It’s a great sounding pressing . My copy is super dynamic and flat / noise free. In my opinion this is the best “greatest hits” record they ever released. It’s got almost everything on it.. If you see this, buy it. - What a great compilation. Great selection of songs to have all together in this double album. Also it sounds very good.
- Edited one year agoDon't get the overall rating here and elsewhere as this sounds amazingly fantastic, even though there is so much music on each side. Just received a copy that looks pretty unplayed. The music and running order are both fine, some folks wrote they'd rather have a chronological running order, but comps that work this way are the most boring thing to me... Imagine bands playing that way live 😂
Good to have the non-album tracks as well, like the fantastic "Bankrobber" or "Armagideon Times"!!!
To sum it up: a clear 11 out of five points!!!
Pressing is quiet, dynamic and enough bass-heavy to do its thing. Very near to the most recent 2015-2017 represses, which are fine as well. If you have listened to one album too often then this compilation will make you love the tunes again. Promise! ☺️ - My copy is mislabeled. I could not find any reference of it in any other version.
The label on the side 2 of the first cassette is the label of Trance Dance - Dancing In The Shadows . referencing The Story Of The Clash Volume 1 (2×LP, Compilation, Carrollton Pressing Blue Cover) E2 44035
One of the underrated pressing’s of the late 80’s…
Sound quality is excellent.
Pick up if you see in wild.
