Really Good Album . Guitar & Xylophon Sounds at ist best. ECM typical great sound.- One of my favorite ECM releases, this vinyl sounds pristine. Burton's vibes shimmer like dew in the first rays of morning light, and Towner's guitar blends in beautifully. Minimalist excellence.
- This is a great performance. Just let your mind drift. Some other time (also covered by Bill Evans on Waltz for Debby, is sublime. Rubert Ludwig cut the lacquer. Burtons vibes sound like they are floating in space; the soundstage is huge. It is cut hot, so you won't need to increase the gain very much.

With all due respect to mikeSF_, I could hardly disagree more with his tepid review of Matchbook. This is a fairly astounding recording. The track Icarus is intense; partway through it sounds like someone knocked over a music stand or something, and they kept that take anyway because they knew they'd never improve on it. The track Some Other Time is another real standout. Admittedly, there are a few tracks that seem to be improvised on the spot but that just comes with the territory with ECM.- Edited 3 years agoI love Gary Burton. I love Ralph Towner. That said, this record is a real snooze-fest. It's a collection of fairly unenergetic, dreamy, jazzscapes with little to get excited about. Don't get me wrong, some of my favorite albums of all time have these men's names upon them.
I'm just not digging it. 3 minus.
Recording is good. Pressing is fine.
