- Found this new at a store in Seattle. No hype sticker and it also seemed lighter than 180g so I wasn't sure if it was the same pressing. But I weighed it and is indeed 180g. Did this ever go out of print? Maybe not, and later ones were issued without the hype sticker. This does sound good, but the packaging is crummy bare bones: generic paper inner sleeve that excludes the cool liner notes and photos that came with the CD in '92. Sound is pretty good, but I'm sure it's a digital transfer.
- One of my '10 Desert Island' albums. I have listened to this comfortable slice of music innumerable times in the 30 years it has been floating around my collection. Tender harmonies loaded with moments of pure magic, this album was my enduring respite in the era of grunge and beyond. The antithesis of every popular musical aggression that surrounded my 20s and 30s, I found immense comfort in the words and music and I still get filled with a deep warmth in my soul every time it graces my ears. Always a 10/10.

If one listened to public radio back in the 90’s, it was impossible not to have been both over and under-whelmed by Hollywood Town Hall, an album that was relentlessly played to death, as if they were attempting to break the band into the mainstream, as if those DJ’s thought they had an inside line on something that was going to reshape the world … where the Jayhawks delivered neither.
While many will insist on having you believe that the Jayhawks style is redolent of what Gram Parsons called “Comic American Music,” it is not, and to be honest, neither was the music of Gram Parsons, where the sounds laid down here merely ebb with a bit of the Eagles and Roger McGuinn, though not noticeably so, riding a simpler wave to challenge the grunge craze at the time. Of course the songs come off as melodic, laidback and easygoing, yet even so, the band’s expectations were raised by the likes of Nicky Hopkins (Rolling Stones) and Benmont Tench (Tom Petty), both of who were associated here, with those reputations being so large that they completely overshadowed the Jayhawks, making it all but impossible for the band to rise to listener’s expectations. Of course I’d have suggested that those secret Santa’s be kept a secret, only to be discovered by fans reading the liner notes, and not radio DJ’s imparting this knowledge, as if that alone would make this a worthy listen.
All of the songs found here do not resound, they do not rise, they never take wing, they matter of factly move on within the construct of similar character, similar sound and a sameness that leaves a standout track such as “Leave No Gold,” to define the album as a one hit wonder. It’s an entirely scripted musical palette, one that the Jays would turn to again on their next outing Tomorrow The Green Grass, an album that was so much the same, that even those finger wagging public radio DJ’s pulled it out of rotation, leaving listeners scratching their heads, wondering what all the initial hype was about.
In case you weren’t there then, and it’s hard to believe that thirty years have passed me by, this band from Minneapolis stood in dynamic contrast to other local groups from the time, such as the Replacements and Husker Du, or even Uncle Tupelo, all of who came off as rather confusing and lost to my ears, attempting to create an alternative country movement that in the early 1990’s sounded incomplete and floundering. Hollywood Town Hall is not one of those albums that instantly clicks, nor does it click by the third or even fourth spin, it never manages to burn itself into one’s sub-conscious, nor does it reveal any hidden melodic secrets, scripted imaginative lines or a reason for one to return to this outing. I assure you, Hollywood Town Hall is not the birth of alternative country, where if you didn’t get what Olsen and Louris were doing then, I doubt your gonna fall comfortably in line today.
For the most part, a very average record that made no waves and has been relegated to those early Sunday morning public radio broadcasts, where it shows up now and again to ease you into what’s left of your weekend.
*** Now, if you do dig this album, I’d highly suggest that you grab hold of the vinyl or one of the newer remastered compact discs, they’re sonically lightyears beyond this original recording.
*** The Fun Facts: The album’s cover was shot in Hollywood Township, in Carver County, Minnesota, where the band added the Hollywood Town Hall banner, just in case folks were able to make the connection, where as with the music, the Jayhawks simply over-labor things to death. This all leaves Louris to recall saying, “We drove by this iconic look building in Hollywood, Minnesota, and it was sort of fitting that after spending four months recoding the album in Hollywood, California.” (laughing) Of course the whole CS&N musicians on a beat couch in front of a weathered building is lost on no one.
Review by Jenell Kesler- Edited 4 years agoI second that! On top of being an amazing piece of music, this remaster/pressing is spacious, warm, and clear.
- Just got my copy, sill sealed - upon getting the record out felt the need to clean it before playing. All is forgiven now, sounds great.

Early 90s = last magical era in music in LA and specialy about DefAmerican, beautiful pressing, crisp, dynamic, great signal to noise ratio. When the people around Rubin cared about pressingquality...!- The Jayhawks break through in 1989 with a reissue of the album Blue Earth, a plate that four years earlier had appeared silently (and without title). In the early years, the band from the foursome Marc Perlman, Thad Spencer, Mark Olson and Gary Rich. After various changes in the composition are only the latter two still in the current band today as five actively operates. The typical country rock that the band the first fifteen years, swapping it with the album Smile around the turn of the century for a typical sound. It doesn't show any success, after which the men from Minneapolis to fall back on the old country rock concept albums with the Rainy Day Music (2003) and Mockingbird Time
