The Chemical Brothers ‎– We Are The Night

Genre:
Style:
Year:
Notes:
The original cover featured parts based on the famous photomontage 'Lonely Metropolitan' (1932) by the Bauhaus artist and designer Herbert Bayer. No credit to Bayer was given. One year after the album's release it was reissued, with the Bayer-influenced elements removed from the artwork – presumably due to legal action by Bayer's estate.

Of all of The Chemical Brothers' dismal collaborations with imagination-free indie morons (Noel G*ll*gher, clueless, dreary Beth Orton, all the rest), 'All rights reversed' is by a long stretch the worst. The Klaxons presumably thought that the spoonerism of the title was very clever. It might be, to a not-very-bright five-year-old. Their monotone, shoegazing-sixteen-years-too-late vocals are the worst heap of dung ever coiled-out by a guest on a Chems record. If you're going to centre a vocal or instrument part around a single recurring note, then it's a good idea not to choose a particularly irritating, whining one. This track still has a good claim to be the worst track – of any electronic or rock genre – released in 2007. And there was some stiff competition that year.

Not to sound like every other Chems (Chemical Brothers) fan sharing their views and reviews about their favorites (and not so much) from the long-running duo, but even though "We Are The Night" falls under one of their least memorable studio outings, the production and composition still remains remarkably and uniquely theirs, especially in referencing their temporal succession of releases and taking into account their previous effort, "Push The Button". While older fans who wished for more "Surrender" or "Come With Us", or a return to both a more instrumental outdoors party-esque flavor mixed with the Bros`unique modern twist on 60s psychedelia, both the fans and the Chems themselves are growing older, and the age of the "rave" generation was already long gone by the time this album was produced.

What we have here is essentially what I myself can only describe as the natural continuation of "Push The Button", with some rare moments of delicious heightness (such as the infectious "Burst Generator") alongside some of the Bros' lesser favorable moment (the highly forgettable "Salmon Dance"), with some continual evolution and exploration of different territories which helps any artist keep those creative juices pumping, especially when typecasted early on in a specific genre. After all, not everyone can get away with being who and what they are the way AC/DC have been doing since the tragic death of Bon Scott.

The magic of any Chemical Brother album comes from the fact that they themselves put so much care and heart into their creations that we, the listeners, can only benefit and enrich ourselves by re-discovering new layers and textures with each consecutive re-listening, something which is very beneficial for an album such as "We Are The Night" which may not be an instant favorite upon first listen, but still manages to have enough Chemical moments to satisfy the fans, perhaps those into their more recent offerings (as well as those enjoying the hip-hop/electro crossovers) but some of us older "Planet Dust" partisans as well. It's simple; give it a few shots and let it speak for itself. All the album asks is to be given it's chance.

this album is by far the worst album I've ever heard. it's funny because this is my first review on discogs but it has to be done. even diehard CB fans should question the effort into we are the night. saturate is probably the best track on the album but it's nothing incredible. I guess everyone's prime eventually ends...

"We Are The Night" is the most psychedelic chemical brothers album yet, far from Big Beat !
The feeling of "We Are The Night" is closely related to "Surrender" : retro-psychedelism with old-school synthesizers.

There are others samples not repertoried in album's notes.
The classic "Crystal Grass" by Crystal World (1974) for the "Modern Midnight Conversation"'s bassline and the very rare Massimo Barsotti's "Whole Lotta Love" (1983) in "Burst Generator".
