When it comes to pure fun and energy, I can think of no album better suited than Shanghai My Heart. Hailing from Norway, Surferosa came to prominence after winning a Norwegian band contest called So What. Now I know what you're thinking, but this is no X-Factor style act.

I still recall the first time the band caught my attention, via the colourful sleeve of "Neon Commando" that practically screamed 1982. As a fan of early 80's New Wave pop, I was hoping to find some Kim Wilde style gem. I was not disappointed. This single is included on Shanghai My Heart, and it is a perfect example of Surferosa's energy.

Not only do they display the sparkling pop energy typical of early 80's New Wave pop, but in their singer Mariann Thomassen they have one hell of a firecracker. She sounds ready to explode at any second, constantly threatening with a dangerous edge yet still capable of melodic touches as when the Transvision Vamp-esque "Unit (Supply Of 11 Roses)" begins.

Synthesizers are in abundance, as are guitars but crucially neither are allowed to overstate their mark. Mariann is the focal point, but the united band ethos is always present. Also worth noting is Mariann's use of language. She will regularly flit between English, French and other languages which I dare not even try to guess! This makes for a constantly refreshing sound, made all the more invigorating thanks to the crisp production.

Shanghai My Heart is a fantastic album of pop songs, every one a treasure in my heart.
