Notes

About the album title:
Initially released as Danzig 4P, a reference to the "Four P Movement" and the fact that this is the fourth volume of Danzig's (eponymous) body of work, this release is usually referred to as Danzig 4 or simply 4 on some occasions. The CD itself and the labels on the vinyl LP also state the title as being simply Danzig 4.

In various 1994-1995 interviews, vocalist Glenn Danzig explained that he did not wish to give the album a title, as he felt that a logo or printing would ruin the artwork, which he wished to stand on its own. After pressure from representatives from American Recordings, who did not want to release an unlabeled album for fear that sales would plummet, Danzig relented and allowed a sticker reading Danzig 4 to be placed on the album's cellophane wrapper. To the right of the "4" he added a tiny letter "p", in reference to the "Four P Movement".

Artwork and packagings:
The album cover features artwork by Glenn Danzig. Glenn Danzig has referred to the symbols on the album cover as "Vehmic runes" that spell out "Danzig". They were taken from the alphabet of a secret tribunal group from Medieval Germany called the Vehmgericht.

The liner notes contain a panoramic picture of the four band members in propped up caskets as a Bill Clinton impersonator shakes hands with a man wielding a sniper rifle. Glenn Danzig would later reveal that the FBI considered him a threat to Clinton, the American President at the time of the album release. The liner notes also include a yin yang symbol incorporating the Danzig skull, by artist Michael William Kaluta.

The first pressings of the album were sold in a distinctive cardboard sleeve, which Glenn Danzig claimed was more like that of an old-fashioned LP and more environmentally-friendly than the common plastic CD jewel case. Since this initial release of the album, its cardboard packaging has been replaced by the jewel case.

Like Danzig's previous three albums, Danzig 4 has been labeled with a Parental Advisory (originally in the form of a sticker until the repackaging in the jewel case) since its initial pressings, despite the absence of common profanity.

Sounds like it’s mastered from the CD. Cover art is blown out and pixelated. Still beats forking out for an original pressing!

Question for everyone with this original Euro pressing: are the guitars folded down to mono (in the center of the stereo field, behind the vocals) on this pressing as well? The original U.S. vinyl pressing has that! Not on the old CD though, all rhythm guitars are spread to the sides as they should be on the CD. But in the official U.S. vinyl the guitars always sounded quiet and phase-y to me, and I just listened again and realized all of the rthm gtrs are in the center! Very weird. Everything else in the mix is still in stereo... That means American Recordings sent the mix off to be mastered and pressed with the gtrs already summed to mono. No fathomable clue why they would've done that, besides by mistake... So i was wondering if the Euro pressing has that same anomaly.
Thank you in advance to anyone who checks their copy. Come on back & let me know!

So I just received this pressing and was super impressed w the packaging. But the new master that somebody made for this vinyl is very "MEH"... I don't understand all the praise. I've listened to the cd since it came out, and this record has a huuuuge EQ shelf ducking out a ton of the top end, starting in the high-mids. So it does tame some of the high-mid sibilance of the original master, but at the (huge, to me) cost of the overall air and space of the real album. It's blanketed in comparison, the drums lose all of their transient punch, and the cymbals take a way further back seat as well. The entire image also sounds much less forward as another result. I had to turn my treble knob all the way up to mimic the original sound, and although it did bring back most of the drum snap & vibe, that treble knob doesn't extend low enough into the EQ to really bring the high-mids back to where the vocals, instruments and reverbs project forward as much as the ol' CD. There is also a big audio gap between track 1 & 2, the songs don't fade into eachother like they should, and it actually cuts out the first couple of seconds of track 2. Clearly someone took their cd tracks, or online download, and had it pressed. "Remastered" in the process. So this is definitely, overall, a bootleg quality-audio pressing. Considering the subpar quality control of the master, it's absolutely not some secretive official pressing from the Danzig camp.
All that being said, the audio isn't bad! It's just inferior to other official options (CD & high def streaming.) The vinyl pressing quality & packaging are actually great! Next-to-silent pressing. Mine does have a warp like others have stated, but not enough to cause any playback issues.
So yeah... If ya find a good deal on this, like the cool packaging and don't mind the audio flaws and inferior master-of-a-master, I'd say go for it. But it certainly isn't the be-all-to-end-all of this album. Hopefully eventually 'Zig & American Rec work out their tiffs and finally get a proper LP master pressed.

Packaging alone looks amazing. The main image is glossy where the rest is matte. The attention to detail on the packaging is nuts. I heard Danzig did not want any identifiers on the packaging, in that vein the spine markings are really small. The poster is nice and the image is crisp. My disc is either not warped or its very slight. The edges are a bit rough. The audio sounds pretty good. Overall great quality bootleg that wont remind you its a bootleg.

Does this variant have D3 ends on a lock groove with a blank space before D4 & bonus track “INVOCATION”? Like the Black Version

Sound very good! The bass are more present in the mix, low noise pressing, good "soundstage". The only small negative point that the voice of danzig has certain "hiss" too loud in a few passages but nothing more. This version definitely sounds better than my real original version which I have always found "flat" on the sound.

Rumor is these aren't necessarily bootlegs, just not involving rubin/def jam/def american.. Some involvement might have occurred. But who's to say? I'm just happy to own all 4 on wax. Waiting for 5, 6, and 7 to drop. 8 and on I kinda checked out, but I wouldn't mind the pain of owning the entire catalog.
