This has always been one of my favorite albums. And though my memory may be distorted, I recall way back in the day that this album was much-suspected, much-dismissed, and much-maligned when it emerged as the offering of the new line-up of Genesis. As a threesome.
I don't want to evade it -- this music is very sentimental, even potentially, sappy. But my gawd, is it good. If you're going to be ok with having your heartstrings tugged at a little bit (and more than a little bit), this may be a very profound listen for you, as it is for me.
There are songs about a snowman for criminy's sake, there is, what used to be known as, an old-school "story song" about Cowboys and Indians. There is another fable about stumbling across a seductive fairy queen of some species. I mean, you got some stuff going on here. You have to bring yourself to this record. You can't meet it halfway. Appraising it "objectively," it's always going to be hung out to dry.
This is a prog pop album you should give yourself over to, accept on its own terms, and marvel at the boldness (or the naivete of fame's isolation) of the people who wrote this and performed it.

PS: What I actually came here to say -- I have three copies of this PRC (PR) pressing, and it is prone to off-center spindle hole. Unfortunately, the music appears to be vulnerable to that flaw, especially for example, at the very opening of A1. There are a lot of held high notes on here, it turns out, and the ear is sensitive to wavering higher frequencies. So, you may find throughout the whole album, a subtle queasy warble. I have wondered if it was the characteristic idiosyncrasy of analog synths, but I don't think so.
For whatever reason, I have not listened to another pressing variety besides this one.

Really good album which was the last from the “proggy” Genesis. Production could have been far better though. I find it a bit ironic though that this, the first album without Hackett, has the guitars very high in the mix. Hackett’s guitar work was virtually inaudible on some of the earlier stuff and drowned out by keyboards. It’s a bit of a middle finger if you ask me.

The recording studio in Holland was probably a mistake to cause poor dynamics in the final scene.. However, the UK first press helps to make up for this deficiency by increasing the volume enough.

            Sorry to disagree.
Yes, this is a difficult mix and a difficult running time for a single LP, but, taking the aforementioned into account, this is still a very nice sounding - and for be the best I heard so far - version.
The cellphone comparison is way off and the sibilances in Follow You Follow Me cannot be reproduced with my copy and my setup.
If you don't like the mix, that's one thing, but don't blame this pressing. And if you be reminded of your cellphone or are experiencing sibilances, your setup may not be up to its task or you have a bad copy.

It’s not bad. I just can’t put my finger on why I don’t really care for it. I’m glad I have it, though.

At first I thought there was something wrong with my set-up: way too much treble and almost no soundstage at all. At times it sounds like listening to a transistor radio. Great music but disappointing pressing. Oh well, for the price I paid beggars can’t be choosers.

One of my favourite Genesis albums. Snowbound in particular is an epic slice of chilly, ethereal pop. Ive never heard a mind-blowing version of the album though. It’s very dense and I would imagine have been hard work to mix. This sounds fine, don’t get me wrong, but the other Genesis albums I’ve got (SEBTP, Lamb, Trick and Duke) feel a lot easier on my ears, especially through headphones.
So yeah, sounds ok. Don’t expect Aja.

This pressing is a little bit better than the awful 1978 Scandinavian (ncb) pressing. And Collins' vocal has a bit more room sound to it (reverb) than on the 2018 Showell reissue. So far the 2018 reissue wins.

Unfortunately, pure garbage pressing - lacks bottom - sounds narrow and weak. Must have been cut from a copy of the UK mastertape and cut with odd limiter/EQ choices. I have several variants of this album, and I can recommend the 2018 reissue done by Miles Showell.

This DER isn’t that bad at all. These editions get slated I’ve noticed. It’s far better than the original CD which had weedy bass. I sold mine ages ago.
The original vinyl lacks bottom eve too.

With this 1994 DER I do notice some sibilances on the vocals in loud parts or is it a little compression and distortion?
It’s pretty warm and analog sounding overall.

I like the 2007 ND Remix a lot I must admit.
The music? It’s from a funny point in the bands career. In 1975 after Gabriel left, the band became even more popular and successful. After Trick and Wind & Wuthering, guitarist Steve Hackett bailed out leaving the trio of Banks, Rutherford and Collins. It was an easier time for the band as there was only three and this album is heavy on material by Banks and Rutherford. It’s a transitional album that sees the band moving from prog to pop in many ways.
