- Great album, appropriate for Trevor Dunn! But the genre of "Downtempo"? I don't think that does it justice. "Abstract Toy Noise Lounge" would be more appropriate.
- What a fun tipsy topsy somewhat trippy album this is, sounds great on vinyl. My tip? Grab a copy if you can track one down
- Tipsy is a perfect example of why good mixing doesn't make good music.
It's harsh, sharp and not enjoyable on any level past the first listen. - When someone excels at the art of turntabilism, mixing technique, looping and posses an inmense catalogue of 1950s-1960s lounge and exotica then it gets something like this. Pure psychedelic bliss.
At times it reminds me of Nurse With Wound, maybe for Tipsy's ability to mesh with a web of loops to create an enterely new song full of color, tonalities and caleidoscopic hypnotism.
It is as well a mosaic of pieces that roll us back to a magic time visit to lounge music with a subtle modern twist. The music is soothing as easy listening but also brings a part of shadow abd strangeness, making the hypnotic into a bit unpredictable.
The fact that it was published by Asphodel label especialized in illbient and hip hop turns out to be logic, this is a work made with the technique of sampling and mixing but without the hip hop sense for soul and jazz, a different thing, totally otherworldly. - I discovered this gem thanks to MTV's Amp video program. They used to play the "Mr. Excitement" video and I was hooked. This CD opened me up to the wonderful world of 50's/ 60's lounge-exotica records by the likes of Martin Denny, Les Baxter, Esquivel, and Ferrente & Teicher (yes, there early releases are amazing). These were originators in experimental music using sounds of tropical birds and natural ambient sounds decades before a certain Dr. Alex, Thrash and Youth unleashed their Ultraworld on us in the early 1990! "El Bombo Atomica" is a great song to serve Mai-Tai's and Zombie to company and friends.
