Small Faces – There Are But Four Small Faces

I bought this b/w cover version with the white labels about 35 years ago from a dealer who told me it was a promo variant sent to the local radio station. And agreed, same heavy vinyl as the originals.
Not sure who decided this was unofficial...

I have this album with the same numbers but it is black vinyl. Listening to this now. Very nice sounding and flat and quiet.

There seem to be 3 US (sold) versions of this, from the 60s early 70s, all with an Immediate label. I have a colour sleeve pink label version and a black and white sleeve white label version. The coloured lable/sleeve version has the best mix of the "in era" releases. It appears that the group and Glyn Johns intentionally mixed it so that for some tracks you got vocals in one channel, percussion in normal stereo and mono tracked intruments in the other, itchycoo park for example has some exceedinly low, near subsonic bass in the right channel with much of the rest in stereo or biased to the left. The bass is missing from all other pressings and mixes as far as I can tell. The white version has a proportion of each channel phase shifted and fed back into the oposite channel. This seems to have killed the bass across all tracks and has pushed any extreme left or right channel voices or instrumnets back into (norminally) centre stage, it sounds like it has been compressed dynamically and any stereo image that was there is now a bit of a mess. This version works well on headphones but is lacking when played on a decent Hi Fi. To do this in the 60s or early 70s would involve some studio kit so i guess the white version is a re-release by CBS and someone "fixed it" to create a more conventional stereo sound stage. There is a 3rd version where the cover image appears to have been recreated by photgraphing an earlier copy. Bootleg or CBS lost the art work? So in my opinion 2 black and white versions both with poorer mix and sound, than the one with the pink label and coloured cover, this version is mixed in an annoying manner, almost as if they didn't know what they were doing....(quite possible) but the sound quality is good, wide frequency and wide dynamic range. Modern repressings will probably have all of this sorted out, if recent CD Box set output is anything to go by...

This pressing includes a very rare instrumental version of Get Yourself Together and an equally rare super slow version of Green Circles ;0)

Hand-etched matrix # in run out, not machine stamped like official CBS product. Faint shadow of a cut-out hole in upper top left corner, on the T in "There" (you need to look closely). No printing or litho info on sleeve. A capital letter A to left of Immediate logo on rear sleeve. Bought it used but in mint shape in 1995. Plays noisy and tinny as Soundfreak mentioned.

Black & white copies are pirated, I think.There were similar issues of the Now That Everything's Been Said by the City and Live Yardbirds.

Another GZ press. Sounds terrible. Dust and grime in the grooves, looks like shit straight out of jacket...
