Peter Gabriel – Peter Gabriel

Possibly an early 1980's Canuck pressing, with good space to the soundstage of an otherwise murky recording or mix. Add a few db's of treble to the top-end & it opens up like a flower and sounds divine. Either way, the songwriting & musical performances are top-notch. The vinyl itself is ludicrously lightweight, almost Dynaflex-like, but is essentially whisper-quiet. Also has the cool picture-sleeve...

Sadly this pressing sounds muffled and wet. It's missing oomph.

Ok, hear me out. This is dangerously close to Yacht Rock. No? Open your mind. Fire up Side A and tell me you can't imagine PG during his phase when he was wearing a white jeans jacket all the time (and looking incredibly handsome, in my humble opinion), and frolicking on an expensive boat bow. If he shot a music video on a boat deck, in the sun, with perhaps a few bikini girls scampering, you would call this George Michael in a heartbeat, and mark it down as quintessential Yacht Rock.
Does PG deviate away from YR on here? Yes, he does. A track or two goes off the Yacht Rock rails.
Incidentally, I think my copy is a mispress. There's a Randy Neuman Blues song on Side B, and also a snippet of some movie soundtrack, and a couple notes of Who's Roger Daltry. That's Yacht Rock hijinks right there.

Horrible pressing because side 2 was not correctly centered. By the time you get to the last track the distortion makes it unlistenable. Side 1 sounds great, but avoid this pressing. Sad, because my copy is otherwise in mint condition.

The record sounds nice apart from the mixing/producing style

For better or worse - and I get that this sounds "muddy" to modern listeners - this is how the record sounded in the day and the way the artist and producer Bob Ezrin clearly wanted it to sound. Great pressing IMO and I love the Hypgnosis artwork and printed inner sleeve.

I usually find that reissues of older albums lose a lot of the top end, but this is very, very good. At least as good as my original, and in many ways better. By comparison, I had the Classic reissues of these and got rid of all of them except So and Passion, which being digital didn't suffer from tape degradation. For some reason, Security wasn't that great.

Muddy, muffled. Yuck. The Liberated Prince of Prog deserves better sound for his first solo outing. It’s a shame because the content is phenomenal. Maybe he used the sonic Saran Wrap and put dishrags in my speakers as an artistic statement and predictive feature to enable Sledgehammer to sound so shimmery years later. He was plotting!
