Having lost one of the BEST puzzle pieces in "Philippe' "Soul" Wynn", "The Spinners" soldiered on and released the "Spinners/8" album...Having now new member "John Edwards" at the helm (along with "Billy Henderson", "Bobbie Smith", "Henry Fambrough",and "Mr. 12:45, Pervis Jackson"), the outlook seemed VERY BRIGHT!!!!!
But the reality was, that the Public was "Philippe' Wynn" SHELL SHOCKED, having the "Spinners/8" album marking only moderate success...It also lead to the SHELL SHOCK treatment to Producer "Thom Bell" as well...Even though he and "Philippe'" had their issues, "Bell" just could not seem to get "Philippe's" Voice out of his head!!!!! But, being the Producer he was, and "The Spinners" was his Brothers, "Bell" decided to give it one more shot, and together, they released "From Here To Eternally"...
Now, I was 8 by this time, so the album cover didn't scare me (LOL!!!!).....But it did kind of threw me off a little...I guess the group was trying to compete artworks with "Rock" acts like "Yes"....It's an ok cover, but I personally thought "Yes" did that better (Just my opinion).....
Anyway, the album starts with "It's A Natural Affair"....It has "Bobbi" on a typical "Spinner/Thom Bell Production"....It sounds GREAT, and having the group with "Doo-Wop" Vocals in the Background was RIGHTIOUS!!!! (Yes, it's Crown Jewel).....
"Don't Let The Man Get You" starts with NICE Keyboards, then goes into a kind of Futuristic Groove....It has nice Vocals, but at times it seems like the Vocals and Melody doesn't mesh well....I believe "Thom Bell" was trying something a little different here....Even if that's the case, I feel like something is missing....
Now, "(A) Plain And Simple Love Song"......
THE BOMB!!!!!
This Ultimate Crown Jewel joint brings us back to how "The Spinners" TRULY DELIVER a "Thom Bell Production"....It has "Henry" doing what he does, in bringing in that Baritone Mood, leaving "John" to finish it out NICELY!!!!!
"Are You Ready For Love" is a tone down "Thom Bell Disco Joint"....It almost sounds like "Thom" had a conversation with "Ron Baker", "Norman Harris", and "Earl Young" who was Producing "Disco" anthems for "The Trammps"....It's ok, but at times it seemed to have "John" feeling lost in the Groove....
"I Love The Music", again has that "Thom Bell" trying to be "Disco" again Vibe....I admit though that it sounds VERY inviting!!!! It doesn't sound overly done, and HONESTLY "John" sounds very COMFORTABLE here (which makes this a Crown Jewel)....I can see People gliding on the "Disco Floor" to this one....
"One Man Wonderful Band" sounds like an updated version of the song, "One Man Band (Plays All Alone)", that "Thom Bell" Produced for "Ronnie Dyson" in 1973....It doesn't sound bad, but again, it at times has "John" sounding lost...Again, I hate to beat the same Drum, but I believe that "Thom" still had "Philippe's" Voice in mind.....
"If You Wanna Do A Dance (All Night)" sounds like a mix between a "Thom Bell Production", "Funkadelic", and "David Bowie's" "Fame"....It's a footstoppin' joint, and HONESTLY sounds like the BEST song "Thom" Produced with "John's" Vocals....It also has the PERFECT "Spinner" Background, which makes this an Ultimate Crown Jewel!!!!!
"Once You Fall In Love" would be the LAST song "Thom" would Produce for "The Spinners"....It starts off REAL FUNKY, with a GREAT Bass, Guitar, Keyboard Mix....Then it has "Bobbi" and "John" LAYING OUT TERRIFIC Vocals on a Swinging "Thom Bell Melody"....It also has "Mr. 12:45, Pervis" proving the PERFECT Bass Backdrop....What a Ultimate Crown Jewel joint to finish with!!!!!!
Well, that's WAS IT!!!!
This was the last time "Thom Bell" would work with "The Spinners"....It was BITTERSWEET!!!! I read that "Thom" really didn't want to go, but he just had a hard time working with "John"....He said that he didn't have a problem with "John", in fact he said "John" was a GREAT Guy...It simply went back to what I was saying....When it came to "The Spinners", he always heard "Philippe'", and he couldn't shake it!!!!!!
"Thom" eventually said good-bye to his "Spinner" Brothers, but they spilt on VERY GOOD terms..."Thom" would go on to Produce more Classics for other artists, including "Silly" and "It's Gonna Take A Miracle" by "Niecy" herself, "Deniece Williams" and "Mama Can't Buy You Love" by the ONE and ONLY, "Elton John"....But Honestly, even though "The Spinners" were able to continue on, there is NO MISTAKE the IMPACT "THOSE Thom Bell Productions" had on the group!!!!!
Getting back to the album though, "From Here To Eternally", also had only moderate success...For most groups, that would spell a career DEATH!!!! But, NOT "The Spinners"!!!!!! We will see that soon, but at least this album is finding NEW LIFE!!!! And not just with "Spinner" fans, but with True Music fans as well!!!!!!!
