Notes
Note: There was no 'Japanese Booklet' included in original issue, advertised by some sellers
The first release of this package of works was a 5xCD set, including a 112-page booklet, within a casebound outer that was inserted into a slipcase. This was on the Revenant label. 1 CD is enhanced. A promotional 'taster' CD was issued in the run up to this release, which has 'Beef [Revenant logo] Heart' on the spine.
This release was shortly followed by the first part of the content of the CD set on vinyl, as 'Vol I' of three. All 3 of these vinyl volumes were eventually rolled out on the combined labels of 'Xeric' and 'Table Of The Elements'. One advantage of the vinyl sets was the inclusion of a poster & a 24-page libretto, the latter included in each of the 3 volumes. The libretto measures W285mm x D300mm, with 2 wires. The poster measures W450 x D215 (215 x 215 folded). Both printed metallic* on white semi-gloss art paper. *[Gold, Vol I/Poster & Bronze Vols II & III].
The first issue of Vol I [XER-LP98] was limited to 3,000 copies, in which the poster was intended. However, this may not have occurred in early issues [some of which may have been over-stickered accordingly] and the poster may have appeared in the 2nd volume. 'Vol I' was reissued after all first issues were snapped up on day one.
Vol II was released 21st Sept 1999 [XER-LP97] and the third, Vol III, was released in December 2001 [XER-LP96]. It may confuse that the Cat#s are in descending order for some reason. Each vinyl volume is subtitled with the headings employed in the original CD set. The labels are numbered 1 to 12.
•CD1 = Vol I/Disc 1 (1-2)
•CD2 = Vol I/Disc 2 (3-4)
•CD3 = Vol II (5-8)
•CD4 = Vol II/Disc 2 (8)
•CD5 = Vol III (9-12)

Reviews
- I have to say this one of the Crown Jewels of my collection. Having been a Beefheart fan since the 70s I grabbed this when it came out. I have all his regular non bootleg releases and to be honest if I'm in the moody to listen to Beefheart I tend to play this before anything else just because this truly shows his personality more than any one of his single albums. The expression "Warts And All" comes to mind. On top of that the packaging is beautiful and stands out on the shelf. To think I originally grabbed it thinking it was an expanded "Trout Mask Replica", It's so much more.
- Side 11 Track One: "Red Rose That I Mean (1972 Live)" is spelled differently from the "Red Nose Than I Mean (1972 Live)" on the CD, thoughts?
- From the formative years of a pre low-register Beefheart in the 1966 demo of "Obeah Man" on the opening track of CD 1, to the instrumental complexities of the Gary Lucas rendering of "Flavor Bud Living" on the closing track 23, CD 5, this excellently produced and presented box set should enable every keen collector to join up an awful lot of dots in the magical musical journey of the obscure genius that is Captain Beefheart.
This is a formidable collection of cuts, track out-takes, field recordings, enhanced CD video footage, snippets and mutterings, all cleverly herded together by the production team and supported by a glossy 112-page booklet of extensive notes & photos that provides invaluable insights in the machinations of the band's development. This retrospective project, thanks to Revenant's John Fahey, has enabled John 'Drumbo' French to dig deep among band member's memories to provide a fascinating historical document. A credit to French, and one he didn't get on the all-important 'Trout Mask Replica', which is just one of the key albums you'll really need to familiarize yourself with - along with the 'Grow Fins' title source on 'The Spotlight Kid' - before tackling this five-star cornucopia of delights.
The highlight for me is the Captain's rendering of "Orange Claw Hammer", accompanied by Frank Zappa on acoustic guitar. A duet by two alumni of the genre who's paths crossed so often, but were alike as chalk and cheese. Possessing this box set is not a matter of life and death. It's more important than that...
Not one for the faint-hearted.
