Reviews
Show All 42 Reviews- This is what every box set should aspire to be. The slipcase, the tip-on jackets, the beautifully pressed LPs - it's all perfect. Absolutely worth every penny.
- Seems to be some confusion in the comments. The first pressing run of this box set in 2010 was numbered. RTI, on their instagram page stated that 2 further production runs of this set have been made since (most likely 2015 and 2019). The Represses are identical apart from numbering and have a seperate release page on Discogs - see "All Versions of this Release"
- There is absolutely no way they made enough of these in 2010 to keep selling them through 2021, but if that’s really what they did they finally seem to have sold all of them.
- phenomenal sound. very nice replica sleeves. sounds better than the MFSL dylan records i have. price is crazy low for what you get, compared to the beatles mono box.
- I really can't believe the 2022 reissue of the single Blonde On Blonde album was merged with the listing for the entire Mono boxset. That is a HUGE mistake. The listings for sale now show the "entire box set" for sale for less than $75 in many cases. Some sellers are NOT indicating that their FS ad is for a single record and not the entire box set. PLEASE FIX THIS!!
- Wanted to shout out one title in particular, The Times They Are A-Changin', for having a spectacular beautiful textured jacket and the best pressing I've ever heard of this title. Seeing it in a whole new light. This set is essential. Fuck Mofi.
- now we know why this sounds better than the MOFIs this is all analog while the MOFIs were all digital
- IN REFERENCE TO THE U.S., RTI PRESSINGS:
AAA, ALL-ANALOG RELEASE, sourced from original master tapes provided by Sony/Legacy producer Steve Berkowitz.
All except for TTTAAC, which used a three-track, 1A LP mixed down on an all-tube chain to provide the two-channel analog reference tape. This was because no original master could be sourced.
I've become extremely frustrated with the Discogs platform over the last few years. They allocate prominent space (i.e. a dedicated input field) on an album's release page for where it was pressed, where it was recorded, who it was mastered by, hell even who provided the album's photography—but not for where/how the tracks were sourced.
Unless someone adds it to the notes, discerning this information requires immense, idiosyncratic industry knowledge or hours sorting through cryptic forums and arcane google results. Sure, not a lot of people care about this. But with vinyl slowly becoming less of a gimmick, and more care is devoted to releasing AAA cuts, the information should be readily available. - This is a near flawless set.
Just like the Kinks, Stones and Beatles Mono boxes, Dylans The Original Mono Recordings is a perfect way to start a collection of an artist knowing youre getting quality.
I have nothing to compare with but from what I can hear the mastering from Marino is pretty much on point with the EQ and given the Tapes used I cant imagine it getting any better sound wise, not even the MFSLs. The material at play here is far from always being the audiophiles wet dream with varying recording standards. So this surely brings out everything to hear and sometimes that can be a really sublime showcase as well. Blonde On Blonde might be the most controvertible cut however as the harmonica gets quite loud and sharp.
A Mono signal helps hide any noise as you know. How meticulous then, that RTI as usual offers clean and silent vinyl to boot, giving a near sure to be perfect player.
The only bad part with RTIs involvement is their infamous pink inner sleeves that are legendary for scratching and contaminating records. This is really the only bad part I can point to about the numbered set.
Otherwise the packaging is hard to beat with heavy card stock and nicely resolved images plus the bonus booklet read.
Great sound, pressing and packaging all in one bundle. Its a wonder how this has not skyrocketed in price like similar aforementioned releases.
Equipment Used:
Technics SL-1210GR Turntable
Paratrace tipped Nagaoka MP-200 Cartridge
Cyrus 2 Amplifier
System Fidelity SF-3050 Tower Speakers - Edited 11 months agoI'm wondering if someone can clarify if this version is pressed at RTI. I don't see an image of the RTI sticker shown in the photos for this pressing and I've seen some on Ebay with the yellow square hype sticker but not the typical round RTI sticker. Thanks for shedding some light!
