“Always On My Mind”, written by Johnny Christopher, Mark James (4), and Wayne Carson Thompson, and covered by a wide range of artists, was released by Pet Shop Boys as a non-album single in late 1987, after being featured in the ITV “Love Me Tender” TV program commemorating the 10th anniversary of Elvis Presley’s death. It featured an extended version by Julian Mendelsohn and a more drastic remix by Phil Harding, as well as various edits and a beatless “dub”. Harding’s remix at one point changes key and transforms into a house version, introduced by Neil Tennant’s specially recorded vocal line “You were always in my house.” This version was later used as the basis for a reworked production of the song for the album “Pet Shop Boys - Introspective”. The success of the initial single in late ’87/early ’88 prompted the filming of extra scenes for the song’s last-minute inclusion in the Pet Shop Boys musical art/spoof film “It Couldn’t Happen Here”, dialogue from which is heard at the end of Julian Mendelsohn’s remix. It also prompted a repackaging of the album “Actually” with the “Always On My Mind” promo single as a bundle.

By and large this is a corker of an extended mix but it's taken me more than 20 years to work out what bothers me about it - the climax of the song is missing! The 12" version, despite its length, skips straight from the second "little things I should have said and done..." section into the coda ("maybe I didn't treat you, treat you, treat you...") without the repetition of the first verse that sits between them in the 7" mix, which is the part of the song with the densest arrangement. It's still a great remix but it's strange that it doesn't include what is to my ears the best part of the song!

CDr in 1987? Looks like fake item to me. Can someone confirm?- Phil Harding mix is the best one. The 7" Dub (B2) is no Dub version at all it is simply an acapella.

Synth pop with disco ambitions. 'Do I Have To' is slow and haunting with a sad descending melody. Very nice. 'Always On My Mind' is Elvis updated and made modern for the 80s. A shorter version than on 'Introspective', this is loud, brash and fun to sing along to. Recommended.
