Pet Shop Boys – Before

This cover is just iconic! Found this promo single in a record store in Amsterdam for €50 in a perfect condition and bought without a second thought.

I remember this was really hard to find in the UK on vinyl when it came out. Maybe because of the erotic artwork, most of the vinyls were a boxset so pricey or limited DJ only promos and the remixes got bought up quickly. Tenaglia's Twilo dub was always my fave :-)
The Underground Mix is pretty good aswell. Its basic and stripped and Danny was clearly influenced by the productions of Basic Channel and Dub Techno at the time.

Why is this going for such high prices nowadays? I bought mine on here for 10 dollars only two years ago.

Although they were quick to assert that it wasn't either of them, Neil and Chris have never been able to identify the person whose member was immortalised in this way because the photo was the work of a third party, American artist Richard Prince, taken from a published collection of his photographs (from the book "Adult Comedy Action Drama").

"Bi-lingual" is one of my least favourite PSB album (only "Release" seems worse to me) and "Before" is by far the weakest 1st single ever released from a PSB album to date.

These were the tracks that pushed me away from the Pet Shop Boys for a pretty long time (from 1996 to 2004) before they really came back to form with the marvelous "Flamboyant" single.

BEFORE sees the Pet Shop Boys beginning to integrate electronics and dance music culture even more seamlessly into their special brand of pop. The title track is a lovely ditty, sweet and romantic (though with a disturbing undertone, if you listen to the lyrics). "The Truck-Driver and his Mate" is a little bit more rough trade, if you catch my drift. "Hit and Miss" mixes reminisces and romance, but the track isn't as polished as it could be. And yet another version of "In the Night" -- can't get enough of a good thing, I say.
