The book “Sophie's World,” by Jostein Gaarder gives us a hint at what the album’s all about, or at least the title, ”Only philosophers embark on this perilous expedition to the outermost reaches of language and existence. Some of them fall off, but others cling on desperately and yell at the people nestling deep in the snug softness, stuffing themselves with delicious food and drink. ‘Ladies and Gentlemen,’ they yell, 'we are floating in space!' But none of the people down there care.” An interesting notion to be sure, especially considering Jason’s penchant for blissful narcotics.

Bearing that in mind, Spiritualized have always seemed a rather desperate band, certainly acclaimed, though more for the abiding hopes by fans that one day they’ll perform those ‘old songs’ as Jason Pierce refers to them, from his Spacemen 3 connection, where perhaps Pete Kimber will walk on stage and complete a long awaited dream. But I digress, Ladies & Gentlemen … is a rather formative and emotional album, one laced with turmoil and discomfort. Kate Radley, girlfriend of Jason, along with being the keyboardist for this release up and secretly married Richard Ashcroft of The Verve, to which Pierce took a left hand turn onto a oneway street, going from a recreational user of harder drugs to a full-time addict at the height of the Brit Pop scene, though to this day Pierce adamantly denies that the album has any connection to his lost love.

There are a couple of different versions of this album, including a number of special editions, where depending if you have the original or the re-master, though most differences are subjective, contextually altering the vision of the record little. Ladies & Gentlemen … stands as a singular ambitious presentation, unique in its fashion, a blend of blues, rock, gospel, soul, drone and orchestras, along with a host of contributors such as Dr. John. For this listener, the album is much akin to the Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper, highly regarded, yet seldom played, save for numbers such as “I Think I’m in Love,” “Come Together” and the blissful “Electricity” … though that said, “Broken Heart” is perhaps the record’s most beautiful and defining moment.

The issue with this outing is not so much the material, but that listeners are constantly looking over their shoulders for more of those Lazer Guided Melodies memories, where the songs were easily touched, felt and easy to associate with, especially considering that Ladies & Gentlemen … is a seventy minute downward spiral of heartbreak and drug induced depressive meandering that should be conceptually taken and experienced as a whole, is not at all compelling or in the least comfortable. The mood created here is singular, one that extends throughout the album without abatement, without out air or space to move within, simply bottomless despair and unspecified vagueness, both musically and lyrically, coming off like the incoherent speech of someone on the nod, charming for a moment, yet frustrating and easily dismissive.

Ladies & Gentlemen is not a product of its time, it’s a very personal product of Jason’s time and all that he was living through, much more biographical than anything on Lazer Guided Melodies, or anything Spacemen 3 had ever done. On a whole, the album didn’t sell well, even in all of its incarnations, leaving me to believe that at some point in the distant future, the album will be revisited without the personal aspirations held within, taken in a different context, resounding with more appreciation and passion. That said, I’m glad the record’s in my collection, it’s one I won’t part with, though again, it’s not one my hand reaches for casually.

*** Some Fun Facts: I would highly advise you not to seek out this album on vinyl, 'less of course you find a double vinyl package, as at 70 minutes, the album's entirely too long for a single record, where the tracks are far too compressed, meaning that you're probably in for inherent pressing issues, along with bleed-through from adjacent record grooves. I've never heard one that I'm satisfied with, neither the 180 gram or the single blue coloured vinyl presentation.

Yeah, this pressing certainly leaves a lot to be desired. The high frequencies sounds fairly tinny, the mix is muddled and the bass is flat. Not consistently terrible but it’s very noticeable at times. I got a mint copy used for $19 usd, and I’m still happy with it.

One weird thing, the labels on the first record are swapped, the A side has the B side label and vise versa.

On my copy, the writing on the cassette itself is black rather than blue.

The packaging and vinyl colors are great, the pressing is awful. Some songs play fine, but a few (such as Broken Heart) are a nightmare of pops. I don't understand why Plain Records can't get their shit together...

I have this beautiful Art Vinyl pressing & I'm happy to say that this is by far the best this album has ever sounded to me. I've compared it to all the major releases on CD & wax & the only one that comes close (still not as good though imo) is the original '97 UK Vinyl & with that you still don't get the 'Can't Help Falling' version of the title track & you have to wade through a high percentage of expensive, noisy, off center pressings to get a decent one. This Art Vinyl press is the one to get & if you ever get the chance - grab it! You'll be thrilled with not only how quiet the well pressed wax is, but how astonishing the sonics are :-)

As below, I have a box-set with all white plastic trays and a separate sheet of pills where the plastic is clear, bought separately much later. Perhaps someone should create a new entry to denote the two different releases.

The images archive here shows both variants.

My copy is pressed very eccentric (a swinger!) on side 1 (but side 2 is fine). There is audible wow. Adds to the wooziness I suppose. What is other folks experience?

I would have to agree with AphexFlynn on this one. My copy has almost the exact problems. Clicks and pops, although not in the worst case scenario, they are most definitely noticeable. Volume differentials are evident as well, maybe in different spots though. For me, Come Together is much quieter than Ladies and Gentlemen, but Electricity is most definitely louder than the rest. The other songs seem to be okay, these two do stand out though. Overall, by no means would I say this pressing sucks... On the other hand, I wouldn't say it's great, it's just reasonable. The colors of the record are nice and I do enjoy the record sleeves (though I replaced them immediately) and the "enclosed leaflet", which is a fun read.
