Image is at least half the reason this album was so maligned- whoever was responsible for the release messed up in every way possible. Let's start with one of the worst album covers in history, a terrible idea poorly executed by a great photographer. The lettering. The colors. In the days when covers said everything about what was inside. This is an album by an angry band that was falling apart at the seams and the cover should have been as dirty as the title, not the cover to the Miami Vice soundtrack. Second, One Hit is an instant classic and should have been the lead single, not Harlem Shuffle. Third, if the band really wanted to get back to basics, they should have gone with basic analog production techniques and let the songs speak for themselves. Too Rude is catchy as hell and would have been a great follow up single to One Hit. The legend could be that the Stones released one of their rawest, messiest, meanest albums in Dirty Work but instead it's the Stones by way of Phil Collins.referencing Dirty Work (CD, Album) CDCBS 86321
No need to look at purchasing any remasters of this album since
this 1st Japanese release, Bob Ludwig master is DA BOMB!referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Clear shrink) 28AP 3150
Ah, yes... the much maligned "Dirty Work" album. I love it. This is the sound of a band falling apart. How ironic that the first two tracks are "One Hit to the Body" and "Fight" because it was during the making of this record that Charlie Watts punched Mick Jagger in the face. It didn't seem to help things and his ego remained in the stratosphere. Jagger snarls and growls his way through this platter for the most part and doesn't attempt to bend any notes. Not that he is good at doing that. Mick is one helluva "bender", but not when it comes to musical notes. He would come into the studio and do his parts during the day and Keef & Ronnie would come in at midnight and work all night doing their bits. It was a band divided. Also, Ian "Stu" Stuart died before this album was finished and it is dedicated to him. There is a 30-second piano solo of Stu's at the very end of the LP. ("Key nto the Highway")
Despite all that mess, I love the end result. Keith usually croaks his way through one or two songs on each album, but he actually sings well on "Sleep Tonight". It sounds unbelievable because autotune wasn't invented until 1997, so he fluked it. I really like this album a lot, even down to the gaudy cover art. The Japanese pressing sounds great too.- Bought this 1986 as my first CD ever :-)
It was really expensive at that time... almost double the price of the LP on vinyl. referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Reissue, Remastered, Stereo, Half-Speed Master, 180 Gram) 0602508773280
Does this version come in red foil like the one in the studio albums boxset?referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Stereo) CBS 86321
Very detailed sound quality on this release. Pressing is lovely too.
I made a needledrop of one of the tracks from this vinyl record - You can find it on the right side in the videos - Under the name: The Rolling Stones - One Hit (To The Body) (1986 European Vinyl)referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Stereo) CBS 86321
Stay away from this one.
PROS: Most people have forgotten it.
CONS: Tracks 1 to 10
I can name you five reasons why you’d be much happier listening to the Sgt. Pepper soundtrack album.
1. The big hit single off the album was “Harlem Shuffle”, a cover of an uninspired R&B number by Bob & Earl from 1963.
2. Out of all ten songs, there is not even ONE single rocker where Mick, Keith or Charlie kick out the jams.
3. Many fans and critics thought the song “Had It With You” was written by Mick about Keith or by Keith about Mick.
4. “Gotta get into a fight/Can’t get out of it” – one of the dumbest lyrics ever sung by Mick.
5. “You better get some sleep tonight/All you gotta do is close your eyes” – one of the dumbest lyrics ever sung by Keith.
And there’s a bonus reason: Charlie’s facial expression on the cover says it all. He can’t even look at the camera he’s so embarrassed.referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Stereo) CBS 86321
Your comment has made me read about Lillywhite and his connection with KFC fast food chain. Now I don't know whether to laugh or cry. How much 'talent' from the 80's was really genuine art?referencing Dirty Work (LP, Album, Stereo) CBS 86321
The Rolling Stones Dirty Work has good songs, just not the right mix for the band. Steve Lilywhite wanted to make the Stones sound like a New Wave band. All the best from Chile
