- Blind hearts has this sad sense of a wasted opportunity. Amazing, deep intro, which then unfortunately turns into an undefined thing, corny at times with the vocals seemingly wandering in no man's land. I feel like somewhere there should be a dub version that expands on the intro theme. Could've been epic.
- Hidden away on this alternate promotional 12" single is the outstanding instrumental "Promises" - written by Pieter Nooten - who was responsible for the melodies and lush sounds of many early Clan Of Xymox classics. Another Nooten instrumental, "Clementina", was chosen to close the "Twist Of Shadows" LP - and while "Clementina" is an appropriate conclusion to the album, "Promises" is the better track.
Even without vocals, "Promises" is a fully realized statement of emotion. Dark and serious - and romantic - and so beautiful. Seemingly a Nooten solo song, "Promises" reveals the central role Pieter played in developing the sound that defined the first four Xymox albums.
"Promises" can also be found on the reissued "Twist Of Shadows" CD and LP. - Edited one year agoThe 4ad release is far better than the Wing release. Love them both, but enjoy the gloomier feel of the earlier 4ad 12".
