Notes
OMD's third studio album, first released on 6 November 1981.
The sleeve design features a square cut-out revealing the inner sleeve. Originally released in a yellow sleeve, the album was subsequently released in a pale blue sleeve and a pale grey sleeve. Subsequent CD editions would also feature blue, green or yellow-coloured artwork.
There's a slight variation with the blue sleeve LP release: On the matrix number on the runout groove it states DID12 A7 on side A and D1D12 B6 on side B.
Album title suggested by Martha Ladly from a book by David Watkin (Morality and Architecture, 1977).
Singles released:
•Souvenir, 4 August 1981
•Joan Of Arc, 9 October 1981
•Maid Of Orleans (The Waltz Joan Of Arc), 15 January 1982
•She's Leaving, 17 June 1982 (Benelux only)
To commemorate the album's 40th anniversary, Architecture & Morality (The Singles) was released on 15 October 2021.

- Had this since release, and upgraded a couple times. I’m now using a Technics SP10 MK2, with a rega RP880 tonearm and a ATVM540ML. Maybe i got a dud, but this pressing is bad, distortion all over souvenir, compared to the 10” single its awful. Loud (wooshing noise floor). Will definitely seek out a Nr Mint/Mint Original.
- The only way to get a pre-emphasis-free disc is one of these (this entry), one of these Architecture & Morality, or a Japanese copy. And good luck finding one of those.
- The bonus tracks are fun and nice to have... the real reason to get this is the impeccable mastering and digital transfer.
- Nice, clean pressing...and such a great album. Souvenir, Joan Of Arc AND Maid Of Orleans. Worth it for those alone.
- If you tortured your original old pressing from back then like I did and want it in great condition, you should buy it here, great tone and sound on a top pressing that has neither background noise nor a crackle or clicks and is absolutely plan 👍
My New Zealand-pressed variant has a blank white inner label on side A where the song names should be and no label whatsoever (just black vinyl) on side B. Does anyone else have a similar copy?
- I wonder a little, why 'reissue' ? It is the first time CD is out.. Is it because it is a reissue compared to the LP version..
- Fantastic sound on a very silent vinyl. Only the first grooves of both sides (about 30 secs of music) are somewhat irregular (not straight) and make the turntable cartridge to wiggle and produce noise if played at a high volume. Other than that, this is a very good pressing, packaging is very nice as well.
- A wonderful period piece & classic of its time showcasing the heritage of the perfect marriage between gorgeous synthesised melody & ambient experimentation, filled with electro-ballads of minor key chord changes & archetypal synth phrasings.
There is more to this LP if you have the patience to find & understand it.
Sublime example of British electronic pop of the early 80s.
WARNING: the opening track starts with a scratchy abrasive sound like there’s something wrong with your stylus but its the actual music - probably what the band intended?
