Peter Saville had seen the painting Dazzle Ships In Drydock At Liverpool (1919) by the painter Edward Wadsworth and was struck by the image.

Dazzle Ships were World War 1 warships that had been painted in fractured and disjointed lines to confuse the enemy as to their exact size and distance. Wadsworth himself supervised the dazzle painting of many ships. After suggesting the idea and title to Andy, Saville carried the theme over to the sleeve design.

The initial sleeve was a gatefold which opened to show a map of the world with a series of holes that revealed the inner sleeve. This featured a yellow triangle against a pink background with a pink triangle against a yellow background on the reverse.

Although OMD had now switched to parent company Virgin following the collapse of the DinDisc subsidary, there was a feeling that OMD would benefit from appearing to maintain an independent position. This led to Dazzle Ships (and the subsequent singles) being issued on a made-up subsidiary label called Telegraph.

On my copy runout B is LSVRG 11027 B (without I). Does my copy have an error, or is it an error by the submitter above?

Minor point but why is the date in the American style 3/4/83 for March 4th when only America uses this and the group are English.

I have grown to really like this LP, bought it on release played it a few times and filed it away. As a youngster it went over my head. Now however I can listen to it all the way through without skipping any tracks. I like it because it's pretty far out experimental for a chart pop band. I find this kind of experimentation is lacking in today's pop/indie bands, which is a real shame. It's almost a continuation of their previous 'Architecture..' LP which I love as I think that one is the pinnacle of their career. The first 4 OMD LP's are great albums, and sadly under rated. They suffered from having the piss taken out of them initially, and later on by other musicians like Julian Cope. OMD I suppose were never seen as 'cool', even by their own admission (there's a youtube video interview with them which they say as much, and that they made mistakes by trying to be too 'pop' later on, which is when they really took a dive creatively after this record.
Overall, initially they were an inventive, unpredictable, surprising group who crafted some very unique moods, feelings and emotions through their music, and didn't really pander or conform to any fashions or fads.
They are a big inspiration.

underestimated release concerning it´s influende on later techno releases, but at it´s time ignored for sample works, which were already no longer en vogue and Pink Floyd labeled - John Peel session version of "genectic enegneering" is a brilliant evidence of musical evolution from rock towards techno. My favorite still is " This is Helena"

It's a shame the experimental gamble did not pay off. Before long you have the distinctly MOR pop of Crush and Pacific Age. It is only now they are taking risks again, I suppose because they have nothing to lose.

No wonder this LP went down as a lead zeppelin. The two best tracks are "The Romance Of The Telescope" and "Of All The Things We've Made", which both already had appeared as b-sides for A&M singles in '81. Beautiful sleeve, and interesting concept, but the music is the sound of threading water.

Does this version have a poly-lined inner sleeve at all?

An underrated timeless conceptual and experimental synthpop album! And in my opinion OMDs best! Def worth checking out and is probably best to be heard from beginning to end in completion. Theres some great experimentation&risk taking ideas here!

Even though Dazzleship flopped as a mainstream album, I still love it. Only the Dazzleship suite is the track I have to skip each time. The more poppy songs on here are extremely underrated. Genetic Engineering and Telegraph are two classic OMD songs. I also love the avantgarde experiments on here. Time Zones is a great experiment, layering different talking clocks from around the world is a great, yet very unobvious idea. However, I think this album did kill OMD, who probably paid too much attention to it's commercial success. Crush and Junk Culture are terrible compared to Architecture & Morality and perhaps even Dazzleships. Or, it may be the new digital technology taking over the studio.

What have these guys done?! Amazing stuff from the early eighties. The sounds, the moods- just a standout, timeless record. The synth stabs after the chorus of Radio Waves- stunning, spine tingling synth-pop joy. Telegraph, Time Zones and the tear-jerking final track - all classics.
