On HOPE & SORROW, Wax Tailor continues his trip-hop pastiche with a cinematic scope, from the Western twang of “Once Upon a Past” to inviting the mighty Sharon Jones to join him on the funky retro of “The Way We Lived.” He isn’t above having a little fun either, as on “The Tune” and “There is Danger.” Charlotte Savary makes a reappearance too, lending some slinky soul to “The Man With No Soul” and noir to “To Dry Up” or the appealingly bizarre “Alien in My Belly,” while Ursula Rucker lends her trademark spoken word to “We Be.” He doesn’t shy away from hip-hop, either, with guest spots from Voice, A State of Mind, and The Others, but I think his instrumentals might be stronger overall, like the stuttering beats and guitar on “Sometimes.” This album leaves me with more hope than sorrow.
Pressing sounds very good despite being off-center - by a lot! I’m surprised my turntable plays it so well, there is a serious centering problem on the first LP
