A Certain Ratio – To Each...

To the notes listed above. I did personally buy the box set, new and sealed, with the three CDs inside - also sealed. I bought it in May 2019 for $115, as a serious Factory and ACR collector. I mainly wanted the Japanese release CDs with the unique extra live tracks, and the (immaculately and commercially made) box was a huge bonus.
I'm intrigued as to why this wouldn't count as a listing, given we do legitimately have other record shop re-badged LPs listed in some cases, and the individual CDs themselves are legitimate releases.

Bleak and minimalistic. Joy Division meets Disciplina Kičme. For example...

Joy division in funk sauce. Or if u prefer, Sly and the Family Stone in a Martin Hannet studio. The result is very interesting, probably ahed of the time when it was published. The massive use of funk bass lines is the mark of this LP in a very gloomy atmosphere. Definetely something to hold if you like late 70's early 80's New Wave.

When I hear the drone of the final song from "To Each", Winter Hill, it kick my head in with its beat,Yes, I know that I'm on my way into another brilliant release from Manchester's A Certain Ratio....Martin Hannett once again sets the scene behind the board as he did oh so well from some of those other Factory geezers. At times reminiscent of Talking Heads, John Cale, and fellow factory stalwarts, Crispy Ambulance & JD but truly inventing a sound of their own. Too bad that this band drifted out of experimental and into salsa rock. I wish they'd cut an LP with Vini Reilly.

"Choir" is a highlight on side A but Winter Hill is a masterstroke....

To me it is not such a brilliant album, but "Winter Hill" is a really tremendous and overwhelming track. Throughout it's 12:45 the tension rises very subtle and finally doesn't simply burst, but slowly fades out as if a wind would blow it into pieces. This is very tricky.

this is one of the groundshaking records in the early 80's - at least for me. ACR's seemly high-pitched, cool space funk with lots of percussion and the permanent growling of space makes you feel kind of weird. this has nothing to do with 'factory sound' -this is beyond...
