The late session percussionist Jimmy Maelen worked with nearly everyone on the NYC studio scene, and elsewhere-- he's even on the Doobie Brothers' "yacht rock" classic "What A Fool Believes". One can only imagine how many LPs and 12" singles he worked on without being properly credited. This, his only solo album, came out on John "T.C." Luongo's Pavillion imprint, with Luongo and his studio partner Michael Barbiero working on this album as a whole. Overall the album has a very tight late 70's studio feel with Randy Brecker, Vicki Sue Robinson, Irene Cara, Luther Vandross, and Paul Shaffer all appearing among the many pro studio players. Naturally Maelen allows for loads of long percussion parts and instrumental solos between his vocals, and the Luongo production & mix builds add drama. Some of the slick uptempo funk vibe hasn't dated extremely well (the Stones cover notably), but the first side is rather strong and the last track on the B-side has earned some modern interest.
Also of note is the cover art, which was shot in the legendary CBS Records pressing plant in Pitman NJ, which today is of course long lost to posterity. Not only do you see rare shots of the 45 assembly lines and workers (clad in awesome CBS workshirts!), but the back cover allows the factory workers to ham it up with Jimmy's drums and percussion in a total mug moment. An interesting curio not only of a specific time and sound in music, but of record history to boot.
